nebulizer ?

So, my 2 year old was wheezing and short of breath this morning.  Doctor wanted to see him right away (this was our first sick visit, ever).  She said it might be a virus, but it is more likely allergies, based on his other symptoms.  So, she prescribed albuterol every 4-6 hours, and zyrtec every evening.  We did one nebulizer treatment at the doctor's office and it was horrible.  He screamed the whole time and fought it with everything he had.  I'm scared to do it at home. Does anyone have any experience with this?  Do you think it will be a little less difficult if he is in a comfortable place?  Will he get used to it?  Does anyone have any tips for getting through this without (me) getting injured?  Any help or words of encouragement would be appreciated.  Thanks!

Re: nebulizer ?

  • I did it while DS slept, do you have a regular nap still? That may work well

  • we have been using a nebulizer for almost four years now and I remember the days of the screaming and flailing.  Everything everyone else suggest were great.  I would also start with the mask a little off their face first and as they get more distracted by a tv show put it closer and closer until it is touching their face.  I would start maybe 2-3 inches away.  good luck unfortunately if they scream they scream... having the medicine is more important than having a happy kiddo right now.

  • Thanks for the tips, everyone.  We just did it at home and it was horrible.  I'm not really one to get upset about things like this because my take is that it is medicine and it is important, but my mother was helping me and she was getting all agitated about it.  It did not go well and no amount of bribing or enticing helped.  It sounds like it will get better as he gets more used to it, so hopefully that's the case.

I think I'm going to need a breathing treatment of my own due to your sig, @mrsbadkat

  • @rvasc811 My mom watches him during the days, so she was with us today, and I thought that it would help some.  I'm hoping the one later with his dad goes a little better.  And yes, wtf to grandparent anxiety.  My mom is just that type though.  She couldn't even stand to go with us to get our ears pierced when we were kids.
