STM+ poll

I'm sure most of you have heard me complaining about what a terrible sleeper DD is (sorry!). When I was pregnant with LO, many people told me that their second kid was much more easy-going and better at sleeping than their first. I'm scared to jinx it, but it seems true for us so far.

How about for you guys? Is your second more laid back than your first? And is s/he a better sleeper?

  • Ds1 was a unicorn ds2 was a monster ds3 is a step under a unicorn but no where near a monster :)

  • Vanessa was a better sleeper than Maverick is but she was also formula fed. She was sleeping through the night by 4 weeks & definitely was taking nice long naps during the day. I credit her better sleeping habits to being full longer due to the formula though & not because she was my first.
  • DD fooled us into thinking she was a better sleeper than DS had been. DS didn't STTN until 14 months old. DD STTN from 1 month old to 4 months old, then never did it again until 22 months old. So far, E is better than both of them. She goes down easier and sleeps longer. We'll see if that continues.

  • DD1 was a unicorn. So is DD2. We want 3 kids. I'm scared for LO3.

  • So far they are pretty similar, but DD is way easier to get to sleep initially. There would be nights DS would stay up until 2am.
DD is almost always asleep by 11.
Both are the same in regards to waking up to feed (frequency) and going right back to sleep after eating.

  • Yup. DD2 is my unicorn. But I can't enjoy it at all because my toddler still wakes up 3 times a night. DD2 will sleep for 7 hours straight. Sigh. I wish they both would!

Ha, @bunnyfungo‌, I so feel your pain. DS slept 6.5 hours last night, and DD hasn't done that in weeks.

  • DS1 was, and still is, a terrible sleeper. Hard to put to sleep, hard to put down once asleep, woke every 2 hours on the dot for the first 10 months. Even now he only sttn if he's in our bed.

DS2 is definitely easy by comparison. He takes very little rocking, is any, to put to sleep. He can fall asleep on his own even if we put him down awake (drowsy). He's averaged 4-hour stretches at night since day 1. I didn't believe that unicorn babies like this existed until now.

  • Yes, true for us. I had to wake DD up to eat for the first few months, she was sleeping through the night the second week and slept constantly. So far, DS2 is a great sleeper too, not as great as her, but really good.

  • DS1 was easy in some ways, harder in others. He practically never cried.... so long as he was being held. I held him all day long because he would cry if I put him down. He was a decent sleeper until about 5 months, when he started waking up more often and then didn't sttn until 23 months, which he did until approximately 27 months, right after ds2 arrived. Now he's in our bed halfway through every night.

DS2 is sleeping well, doing a 5-6 hr stretch and a 3-4 hr one. Only time will tell if he'll continue to be a better sleeper... He is a bit fussier than DS1 but also is more content to nap on his own.

  • I have had two amazing sleepers but ds2 has the slight edge as he started sleeping 6+ hr stretches at less than a week old and has ever since. Ds1 was more like 4 weeks.
  • DD1 was a pretty good sleeper.  She would do 4-6 hour stretches early on and then started doing 10-12 by 12 weeks or so.  But she also had long stretches where she'd start getting up again if she was growing or teething - wasn't too bad though.

DS was an amazing sleeper right from the start.  At 8 weeks old he started doing 10 hour stretches and pretty much never stopped except for the occasional off night here and there.

So far DD2 is doing well.  She had her days and nights mixed up for a little while but seems to have straightened them out.  She's only had one 6 hour stretch so far, but she's still young :)  I'm hoping in the next couple of months she starts doing 10-12 like the others did.

  • The twins are both much better sleepers than DS1 was. They are averaging a 5-7 hour stretch every night. It took DS1 nearly a year to do that.

Each have their own positives and negatives.

With DS, I remember him napping better at this stage. My memory could be serving me incorrectly but I think he napped a lot at 7 weeks. And he would sleep in his bouncer. And I don't remember having to rock him for a long time before he'd fall asleep. He wasn't a good night sleeper until he was probably a year old. He'd wake during the night often and not go back to sleep for a long time. I'd watch an hour long show I DVRed during the night when he was awake.
He liked being active but was content to sit in his bouncer for a while, which was great because I could get things done.

DD needs to be rocked for 30 minutes+ before she naps and an hour+ before nighttime sleep. She won't take a long nap during the day unless I rock her or lay dibs with her. At night though, when I finally get her to sleep (been at it for 4 HOURS now and she keeps falling asleep and waking back up), she sleeps well. She usually wakes every 3 hours and goes back to sleep right after nursing. She's had longer stretches though--once was 7 hours!!! I don't remember DS sleeping 7 hours for several months.
She doesn't seem content doing anything... She won't sit in the bouncer for very long, she cries more, and she wants to be held all the time. I think she has colic. Basically she's my unicorn at night but my hellion during the day and it was the opposite with DS.

  • I'm the opposite of most, my older two slept like a dream from the get go. They've been the kids that just need to be put down and they'll PTFO (never fought sleep, didn't need rocking, didn't wake back up, etc). LO needs to be convinced to go to sleep but once she's down she sleeps like a champ. She's a lot fussier when she's awake too, and she's not that fussy, but the older two almost never cried. I'd still say she's completely perfect.
  • This baby is more laid back in evey way. She sleeps better, eats better and just seems more content. She's also healthier though and was born later and at a higher weight than my first who was a NICU baby. I never felt DD1 was a difficult baby, but DD2 is definitely easier. And that's a good thing, considering DD1 is now 3 and going through a very defiant stage. Having 2 high needs kids at once would be rough
  • DS1 spent two months in the NICU and was fine there. When we got home, he was the absolute worst sleeper. We would have to drive him around at 3 am.

DS2 is an angel. Wakes up once or twice to eat as long as he's swaddled.

  • Dd was an awful sleeper and more high maitenance than ds. We definitly got the opposite the second time around.

  • Both my girls are not "easy" babies, but DD1 was a colicky, cranky beast for the first 3 months. DD2 doesn't like to be put down ever, and wants to comfort nurse all day long, but isn't as crabby As her sister was. She is definitely a better sleeper. Already doing 5-6 hour stretches. Unfortunately after she eats motn, it takes her an hour or 2 to get back down, which was never an issue with DD1.
  • The third one was the worst sleeper, by far. LO sleeps great... But there's plenty of time for that to change.
  • DS1 was a unicorn slept 12a-6a at 3 weeks then would eat and sleep unt 9am. DS2 still gets up 2 times per night and it varies in times and he is 6w. Btw they both weighted 10lbs 9oz at 1 month.

  • I think DS is equally laid back (more so about some things and less about others) but he's definitely a better sleeper so far.

  • Ahhh no, definitely the opposite :P My twins were awesome sleepers. Completely STTN at 8 weeks. Baby girl is almost 5 weeks and won't go longer than 1) 4 hour stretch per night, then 2-3 hrs after that. I EP'ed for them with supplementing, and I'm EBFing her so I have no idea if that has something to do with it? I don't really mind at this point, although more than 1 4 hour stretch would be REALLY nice, lol!
