Freaking out a bit

My husband and I are building a new house a 2 story home, master bedroom will be on main level and other bedrooms are upstairs. We have a 14 month old and I'm so freaking out about him not being as close to me as he is in our current ranch home. I'm so scared to have him upstairs and me so far away from him. I realize that I'm not the only mother to have a child being upstairs but I feel likes he's still so young. Anyone else go through this? Any advice on how to get over this anxiety?

We bought a house last year, and moved when LO was 6 months old. Same deal - master br is on the main floor and he is all alone upstairs. It's a really weird set up, but we love the house other than that. It really bothered me at first, and I still worry about things like "what if there's a fire and I can;t get to him?" But I've gotten used to it now. Having a video monitor helps, but it's just an adjustment like everything else with a new house. Give yourself some time, and just know that it's not going to be comfortable at first. We have a couple other bedrooms up there too, and set up one as a guest room, so I actually spent a night or two up there to be close to him if he was sick. Honestly though, I'm now so used to having him up there, it's not a big deal at all. And I really love having our bedroom on the main floor - it's super convenient and if we stay here long term it's perfect!

We're the opposite of you.  Our home is about 100 years old so the upstairs space was converted to a master suite and all of the other bedrooms are on the main level (we moved from a 2 bedroom apartment right at DS's 1st birthday).  It was a little weird at first, but we have the monitor and overall it hasn't been an issue at all.

We live in a cape cod with the kids rooms upstairs and our master on the main floor.  We have been here for 5 years and I love having the kids upstairs and us down.  I like the privacy.

I have video and sound monitors in their rooms so I can hear everything going on in there.

We are the opposite - our bedroom is upstairs, the others are all downstairs.  I constantly have the monitor on all night. It's not a big deal.  I do worry about when we transition DS to a toddler bed.  He is able to open the door to our upstairs, and go up the stairs himself.  But the stairs are steep, and I will need to figure out a system for him call for us/get our attention without going up the stairs on his own.

We have baby #2 on the way, and for at least the first 6 months, he/she will just be upstairs with us.

We are in a condo - our master bedroom is on 3rd floor, 2 other bedrooms (including DS's room) are on 2nd floor.  DS stayed in our room for the first 4.5 months, since then he's been in his own room on the floor below us for the past 1 year +.  I didn't think it was difficult except when DS was still nursing MOTN... so I quickly night-weaned him after we moved him down. 

I also do NOT have the monitor on at night (we have an audio-only monitor).  I tried having it on, but I can hear every little movement/noise from DS that it was waking me up all night long.  So for the past year, we go to sleep with the monitor off.  We open his bedroom door when we go upstairs to bed, and we leave our bedroom door open.  That way, if he's crying, we can hear him loud and clear, but I don't hear the little noises he makes all.night.long.

We have the same thing. We didn't move her into her bedroom upstairs until she was 6 mos. I have a monitor right by her bed and keep my half of the monitor by my head on my nightstand. One thing I've recently done though is put a baby gate in her doorway because she is starting to become monkey-like in attempting a crib-break. I'm just afraid she will go tumbling down the stairs!

We dont have this issue as of yet as wer are all on the same floor. Once we move we will be in the same situation. My biggest concern is a fire and me not being able to get to my children. Hadnt thought of it until a PP mentioned it. I suppose we will be doing very early fire safty with each of our children and make sure there isnt anything extra plugged in. I think its excessive to have an alarm in every room in our current home but once we move there will be one in every room and hallway. They make the kind that are all conected to the same network so if upstairs goes off then downstairs will as well!
