Nurseries and Baby Gear

Need inspiration for nursery. . .

So, DH and I live in a tiny two bedroom apartment.  We really like it here, and we have no intention of moving, for at least a year or two.  However, we also live about ten hours by car from all our families, and we have always used our second bedroom as a spare room.

So, now the spare room is going to be a nursery, obviously.  What I'd like to do is figure out a way to make this a multi use room.  Basically, if my parents come to visit, then DH and I could stay in the nursery and give my parents our room, provided I can find a way to get a usable bed in a tiny bedroom apartment.  Right now we have a crib, a dresser, a small bookshelf, and a rocking chair that needs to go in this room.  The room is maybe 10 x 12.  Help! I don't want our guests to have to stay in a hotel, especially when they come down for the holidays next year.

  • Have you considered a futon?

  • I have, unfortunatley, DH put his foot down and said he is more than willing to give way to the 'rents/'rents in law when they come to visit, but he is not willing to regress to his college days.  So futon is out.  I have considered a pull out sofa, but most of the ones we've seen are a little out side our budget. Maybe I'll find a nice used one somewhere?
  • There are actually some reasonably nice air mattresses out there, that ?may be an option. ?
  • you could look on craigslist for a pull out sofa
  • I suggest the pull out sofa also.
  • What about a day bed with a trundle bed that pulls out from underneath?  You can get some very pretty adult-looking daybeds and then when you and your H need to, just pull the trundle bed up to make a double bed.  My parents have this at their house and we used to and it always worked very well.

Plus, then you could have a comfy place to sit with the baby when you need to.

  • I second the trundle bed. That is actually where I slept for the first week after having DS because I couldn't get in/out of our bed. You can also use it in the future for your DC when they get too big for the crib.
  • Agree with PP. My brother had a daybed/trundle for their first child and I slept on it many a time. Many of them can be really comfortable.

We are in a similar situation with a small 3 bedroom. We have a rabbit, so the middle bedroom will be an office/rabbit room, the front the nursery and then our room. Sadly we still have the futon from our college days, so that will stay in the nursery. DH actually likes the futon, so he doesn't mind. I'm sure we'll both be spending some time on the futon in the first few months.

  • I know you said no futons, but really reconsider a high-end one.  I have a futon that I've had for about 6 years that I love. We now use it as our main couch in our living/family room (in fact, I'm sitting on it now).  It has a really nice wood frame and a mattress that has real coils.  It's not one of those crappy Wal-Mart specials with the metal tubing and flat cushions that you can feel the bars through.  I used it as a bed for at least 3 years before DH and I moved in together and it's more comfortable than any pull-out sofa I've ever slept on.
  • DITTO the trundle. I would like to have a bed preferable with a trundle in our nursery. Great for guests now and for sleep overs when she is older.
  • We purchased an Aerobed for an extra bed for our house when we have multiple guests.  It takes up about as much room as a large sleeping bag and it is raised so it is like a real bed.  Plus, it inflates in 2-3 minutes, and it sleeps like a dream!

  • I know this is late, but we got a really nice pull out love seat (double bed size) from Bon Ton for around 500.  It is pretty comfy, and the couch is very nice... it's not super hard like a lot of sofa beds.  It was on sale when we got it, but they haved sales like that all the time.  Just an idea!
  • The pull out love seat would be perfect for our room.  I'll also look intot a GOOD futon, maybe DH will change his mind if it isn't one of those ridiculous metal ones with the horrrible foam mattress.
