How much are your babes eating?

Just curious.... I've been reading some posts and there's lots of talk about how many oz you are giving the babies.  I keep asking my doctors and the lacation specialists how much we should be giving the babies and I never get a straight answer.

Beatrice has broken the 6lb mark at the last weigh in she was 6lbs 11oz

Patricia in now 8lbs.

Both are getting 80ml almost 3oz at each feed.  But seems to me your babes are drinking more.

I was pumping and BFing with my one breast, but it has punked out despite the Motilium/Fenugreek and Blessed Thistle  cocktail.

Just wondering how you're figuring this out.

Re: How much are your babes eating?

  • I found info online that a baby should have between 2-3 oz per day per pound. So a 10 lb baby should have between 20-30 oz per day. I am no longer breastfeeding either as only one of my twins could take my milk (the other is allergic) and pumping was just too much. My ped has approved the number and stopping breastfeeding.

My son Evan is smaller (9 lbs) and we fill his bottle to 120 ml each feeding (every 3 hours during the day; generally 7 bottles per day). If he doesn't drink it all it is ok.

My sonScott has reflux so we keep him on the lower end, but still enough. He is the bigger baby (11 lbs) and we fill his bottle at each feeding to 110 mls.

    Hope this helps!

    I hope that helps.

oh man I have a chunky monkey titty monster on my hands! ;)  my little guy eats about every hour to hour an a half during the day and although it's mostly on the boob(so it could be less than the bottle) when we do a BM bottle he will eat about 2.5 oz, sometimes 3 oz, and then often still want to suck on the boob for another few minutes after. during the night he will do the same but only every 2.5-3 hrs. He's 13 days old so I'm kind of worried about keeping up with him when he gets bigger!

edit: he was born 9lbs 4 oz. I'm not sure what his current weight is as we don't see the pedi until tues, but at his 2-day he had only lost 3% of his birth weight.

  • EBF. My husband gives LO one bottle every other night and she drinks 3-4 ounces. LO is 7 and a half weeks and was 6 pounds 3 ounces at birth. At one month she was 8 pounds 2 ounces.
  • 2-4 oz, every 2-4 hours.  Total of between 26 and 30 oz a day.

  • My kid gets breastmilk in a bottle and gets 80 mL 6-7 times a day. He is about 6.5-7 pounds. We had weekly weight checks and I was told he was eating more than enough. The doctors were impressed with how much he took. Of course we then fortified the hell out of it (27 cal diet), but his intake was sufficient for a typically growing baby.

Thanks, this is really helpful.  I feel like I have a goal/guideline to follow.

  • My DS is 12 lb he eats 5 oz every 3-4 hours. My pedi says all babies are to eat 22-32 ounces in a 24 hr period up to 6 months. And that since he's only 6 was old and already taking 35 ounces a day that the next step will be to add cereal to bottles.
  • Little man is 4 weeks and 11+ lbs. He eats approx 4-5 oz of bm every 3-4 hours, but it varies depending on time of day.
