Make the whining stop

My child has turned into a champion whiner/fit-thrower in the last week. I know it's because he can't communicate what he wants, so he's getting frustrated. But, my god it's annoying. So, I thought I'd ask June 13 moms how their children are doing on the whine-o-meter scale.

10 My child whines or throws fits from the moment he gets up to the moment he goes to sleep. Oh, blissful sleep! I'm about to run from the house screaming.

  • SS. I feel like DD went from the baby who cries all the time to the child who whines all the time. She is just grumpy. She has actually been a little better the past week but I don't have high hopes for that lasting.

4-5, whines some, mostly when he is tired or we aren't meeting his needs quickly enough. It doesn't bother me because I always know why he does it.
  • I think, for us, it has a lot to do with her teething. She's getting her first teeth and it's screwing up her sleep and her attitude. I calm her down and politely tell her what she did was rude, I know she's frustrated, but she should still be kind. I think she understands... Sort of.
    This exactly for us.

  • R doesn't whine, per say, but he "MMMMMMM"s all.day.long. Hungry? MMMMM! Tired? MMMMMM! Can't reach the toy? MMMMM! Don't want your diaper changed? MMMMM!

    Holy hell.

Definitely think you hit the nail on the head, it's because they can't communicate.

My SIL works in childcare - basically it's kids our age and older at this point. They are all bilingual and late talkers as a result. She started teaching them basic signs, and they picked it up instantly. Most of these kids are 11/12 months to 20 months. So even if you haven't started it yet, you could try to introduce simple signs for words you use most frequently, and at this age they should be pick it up pretty well.

Good luck! The whining can definitely get on your nerves!
thank you for posting this. Vinny hasn't picked up, yet, any of the sign language I have been trying to teach him. It's good to know it'll come soon.

  • I can't say the baby whines, but DS is almost 5 and could have a PhD in whining.

  • I second (third?) the sign language! Ben only consistently signs 'milk' but that's the thing he generally wants the most, so it's been useful. 'more' has been hit or miss, so a lot of his whining is at the dinner table when we can't figure out if he's finished or wants more.
