Piggy Banks

I want to get one for my daughter, any recommendations?

I'd like to go traditional and something that will survive toddler years.

As a bonus, soap.com has a sale on BacOut. Use the code earthmonth25 to get 25% off and they run a deal for first time buyers for an extra 20% off an free shipping for $25.

  • J bought a bank for A from a local jeweler that's made out of metal, so very durable. We didn't end up with the pig, we got a little umbrella with a bears and cute poem in the side about saving for a rainy day, but they had the traditional pigs too. It's gotten dropped a couple of times but because it's metal not ceramic hasn't gotten hurt.

Suddenly my life doesn't seem such a waste,
    It all revolves around you.
  • Maybe I'll stop at a local jeweler in my home town. Most of the ones here are chain stores that I'm not a fan of.

A lot of their codes stack, so I've been checking a lot of prices for things I use around the house.

  • SAK,
Coffee cans are the best,so much you can do with them!

  • I'm no help because my kids made banks out of old Foldgers canisters. They are shatterproof though ;) ITK-that metal bank sounds adorable.

    I don't have any coffee cans. :((

  • I keep seeing mentions of bac out. What is it? Do I need it?

  • Right now we are using coffee cans as blocks and I hide toys in them. So we can open them up and she pulls them out. Eventually I will put popcorn kernels in one and super tape the lid shut to make a fun drum. Also, when she gets out of the eat all the paper stage, I"ll decorate them with pretty scrapbooking paper.

It helps breakdown toddler poop. Some people dilute it and spray it on poopy diapers. I put a little in my first rinse once or twice a week when I wash diapers.

We have 4 piggy banks. I bought one, then I found one that was mine, then we were gifted one, and then we found a second one that was ours. The first two are ceramic, the third is a molded one. It's not plastic but I think it could be broke with little effort. The forth is a plastic jar with a lid that counts the change as you put it in. It will probably put up with a lot of abuse. I think we got it on Amazon for less than $20.

I just bought some to keep on hand not to long ago and used it for the first time this week. I didn't think my diapers were dirty but they just didn't smell quite right. Apparently they were dirty because they smell perfect now. I think it's a good thing to have just in case.

    ETA apparently I can't count.

  • Thanks for the bac out info. I got the BacOut and California baby diaper area spray for $24!! We were gifted a little stuffed piggy bank, it's very cute, but won't hold much. I plan to have DH make her a piggy bank for her first birthday. He works with sheet metal, copper and can make some pretty cool stuff. I am seeing something that looks like the copper vase he made me. Maybe go to a local sheet metal shop and see if the could do something custom like that, what they can make just depends on the skill of the builder.

My great aunt bought DD a metal piggy bank in the shape of a carriage. It is adorable. I have no idea where she got it from though.

  • I have one that looks just like this ebay listing except mine is still fairly shiny. I always remember having it. I need to get another one so that both boys will have one. I may look at the Things Remembered store next time I'm at the mall.

  • We bought a cute purple ceramic one with polka dots for DD1 from HomeGoods.

And we had DD1 pick out one from BRU for her little sister. I honestly stubby know what it's made out of but it'll go on a shelf and won't be played with, so I'm not worried about it breaking.

  • Not very traditional, but someone gave DS one of these as a baby shower gift: Moonjar

Unicef also sells piggy banks from time to time as a fundraiser. The Google keeps sending me to a UK link, so I don't know what may be available in the US right now. I found some older links to a baseball-themed ceramic pig that looked really cute, but I'm pretty sure they were out of date.
