SHG or HSG?

I know both of these tests are uncomfortable in their own way, but if you were to choose one to have done first which would it be?

My RE wants me to have both done, but my local monitoring Doctor only does one at a time per month. So I will be doing one in May and one in June. I'm thinking get the worse of the two done first and over with.

They were not bad for me, but you hear more people have pain with the HSG.

I only had mild cramps with both test.

For me, the SHG was worse than the HSG.

HSG gave me cramps afterwards. SHG was uncomfortable during the catheter insertion, but no cramping. Both have a bit of fluid leakage after.

HSG was painful, SHG was not.

For me, the HSG was awful. My SHG was much easier and my RE did the SHG during my mock transfer.

I had two SHG, and neither would I classify as even uncomfortable.  I have not had a HSG, so I can't really comment on that one.  I think I would get over the one you are most dreading.

For me HSG was horrible and the SHG (during mock transfer) was only very uncomfortable. But I seem to have a very sensitive cervix compared to a lot of the women on the board.

I had 2 x HSG - hated both times.  Lots of pain!  Don't want to scare you.  It's different for everybody.  I think they let you take Valium before the procedure. 

I haven't had SHG done unless it's the same as SIS.  I just had SIS done last week and it is very uncomfortable but not nearly as painful.

For me, the HSG was painful, the SHG was just uncomfortable. Make sure you take some ibuprofen.

For me, the HSG was very painful and the SHG was pretty uncomfortable but not nearly as bad as the HSG. The most painful part was the balloon catheter and the fluid stretching my uterus. Thankfully, both are pretty quick.

I'll give you an answer but for a different reason. I'd do the SHG because the HSG missed an issue with me. When we first started trying a zillion years ago, they only did HSG's. I was dx with a bicornate uterus. However, when we switched doctors for the third time, new procedures had started and I had my first SHG. My experience is that they are the same test, but the SHG is more advanced. It was found that I actually had a septum and it was treatable.

They are both uncomfortable, so don't pick solely based on this! Best of luck to you!!

I say it really doesnt matter. I have had 2 HSGs and 1 SHG. The SHG before the first HSG, and the SHG was not really uncomfortable at all for me. The HSG OTOH, hurt like the Dickens. Both are super quick, so by the time to feel that you are hurting or uncomfortable, it's over.

I've had 1 HSG and 2 SHG and the SHG is always worse for me. However, in your position, I'd want to get the HSG done to rule out hat being a cause of your IF. It's a huge decision maker in the process. I'm SO glad my RE had me do a HSG RIGHT away b/c I never had to waste time on month of clomid, etc. My tubes were completley blocked and damanged. I think it's good for you to be able to rule that out right away! Just my $.02
