Cloth Diapering

Help w/ ON Solution

Looking for a good ON solution for my 4m old. Currently we're using Kawaii bamboo pockets with 1 large and 1 small bamboo insert. The absorbency seems to be enough if he stays on his back, but he often rolls on to his side and then leaks around the leg. We've also tried our Charlie Banana's w/ an extra insert, and it's been hit or miss. He may be in the diaper for anywhere from 5-9 hours.

Since he's a side sleeper with skinny legs, I'm thinking we need to use a prefold or fitted so there's absorbency all around rather than just along the insert and maybe an extra bamboo or hemp insert. I was planning to order some DR Bamboo fitteds or GMD Workhorses, but while reading forums I came across a lot of people who felt they weren't enough for ON.

  • I'm a big fan of Twinkie Tush fitteds. Their regular fitteds can be enough for most babies, mine uses their special Night Night ones though. They are made out of OBF (organic bamboo fleece) and topped with either OBV (organic bamboo velour) or CV (cotton velour). Very absorbent and they come in totally adorable prints!

I did see these recommended a good bit, but I just can't spend that much per diaper right now. Her stuff is so amazing and so expensive  =((

You could always get the workhorses and use the bamboo inserts (or get hemp inserts) as doublers if it's not enough absorbency. That way it's budget friendly and contains side sleeping pee better.

Eta worst case scenario they could get sold or used for daytime/nap time.

If you don't mind used, get on their fan page. You can pick them up around $20. With my 5 month old I can use a Little Tush at night for 12 hours without a leak. And I don't even fully cover the fitted. On a side note, my husband forgot to put a cover on my daughter with a regular TT fitted and only her fleece pajamas were slightly damp inside.

  • Sbish OBF or Sbish snapless also work well as overnight fitteds. Have also heard good things about Ecoposh.
  • I've gotten all our fitteds 2nd hand from Spots... Mostly we use BSRB, and I haven't paid more than $10 for one (of course, I only buy them in lots, which makes them cheaper per diaper ;) ).

  • Since what you are doing now sea to be enough when he stays on his back, then I would try a good prefold or workhorse with a doubler. It should work fine for you. There are plenty of cheaper options out there!

  • I love workhorses, but i cant imagine they'd be good for over night, even with added absorbency.
I'll have to try it out....

Anyway, i use sbish snapless with a cover, but I'd like to get a wool cover to try.

All of our ON fitteds are currently in a hot water strip cycle, so tonight DS is wearing a Snappi'd prefold with a BB ON hemp doubler, owl print.

I also do this when we travel because it's nice to have diapers that will work for daytime or overnight, instead of diapers for dedicated purposes.
  • Thanks for the suggestions ladies! Lots of options to check out :)

We usually use Sbish overnight but in a pinch we can use a workhorse and a trifolded prefold or a flat laid in the cover (blueberry). It's huge but it works. (DS is ~28lbs and in brown workhorse and red prefolds from GMD. I wouldn't say DS is a heavy wetter tho, and he is in the process of PT.)
Yea, we just use GMD red edge prefold with Thirsties hemp insert. Before that I was using the workhorses. I don't think there was a whole lot of reason for me to switch to the prefolds tho, other than to reduce the wear on my workhorses. Which aren't really being used now atm....
  • My 4 month old is currently sleeping in a yellow edge gmd snapless fitted with a homemade 3 layer hemp fleece doubler. It is working for 12 hours and he feeds before bed, once in the middle of the night, and once early morning. The only time it leaks is if we feed a couple extra times over night for some reason.
