January 2013 Moms

BFP & Mommy Instict

I feel kind of bad posting this because I know a lot of us are TTC for had recent losses, but I do not know who else to talk to. I got a surprise BFP last week, yes I know it is weird to be a surprise I know how it happened, but my very predictable cycle decided to change on me for one month. I am very excited, but still in shock!! I was not sure if it was due to the shock or because it is the second, but I felt very different than when I found out I was pregnant with DD. It did not feel real to me. Being the paranoid person I went with this strange feeling and requested blood work from my doctor. Normally they only do this if you have a history of losses, but I insisted. My results showed my HCG is elevated, yea, but my progesterone levels are low, yikes! My doctor put me on a supplement, which I thought would be a pill, but no it is a gel....fun! They redid my bloodwork 48 hours later and my HCG did double, but need to stay on the supplement. I am so glad I went with my gut and pushed for the bloodwork or who knows if the pregnancy would have sustained. I have my first official appointment on Friday and I am praying everything will be OK. Sorry this was long and thanks for reading, but like I said I did not know who else to talk to who would understand.

Re: BFP & Mommy Instict

  • With Ava, I was on the supplement (gel) as well. I had experienced a previous loss and have PCOS, so they were trying to combat it. It is definitely gross. I don't know how long you've been on it, but just as a suggestion, it may be helpful to wear a pantyliner, as it does cause some pretty nasty discharge... Or it leaks one. Either way.
I remember how scary it was. Praying for you. Please let us know how your appointment goes!

  • Congratulations on your BFP!! A lot of moms on my new BMB took the gel progesterone for several weeks to maintain their pregnancies and are doing GREAT!

I jumped up and down and squealed when I got my second BFP, got super engrossed in my new BMB, and felt lots of terrible first tri symptoms....but this second pregnancy STILL didn't feel real for the longest time. Now that my stomach is popping and I know baby's sex it's starting to become real, but for a long time there I would go to my OB appointments and have a shock moment every time I heard the heartbeat....like, 'I'm REALLY pregnant again?' I'm imagining it has a lot to do with having DS running around all the time.
  • Congratulations! And good job following those mommy instincts!

  • Congratulations!

The progesterone shots suck, but I would rather do that than deal with a goopy vag all the time. Might be something to ask about.

I was on the progesterone insert too, it did suck but I had a successful pregnancy! Do wear panty liners, sometime it's messy.

  • Congratulations!  I didn't feel the same way when I saw the second BFP as I did with the first.  With my first BFP, we had been through the ringer of infertility, fertility treatments, cancer, surgeries, herbs, supplements, you name it for three years, the that BFP was very emotional for myself and DH.  This time around, I first off, wasn't expecting it at all.  Yes, I realize how babies are made, and we weren't using any protection, but my history of IF made me believe I should probably settle in for another long, complicated, and frustrating ride toward my next BFP.  Then when it just happened, I sat and stared at the two pink lines forever.  DS was in his highchair eating oranges and babbling, and I just looked at him and said, "you're going to be a big brother."  DH was out of town, so I had to call him to tell him, and his reaction was the same, "huh, really?!"  One of the third-time mom's on my Oct 2014 board wrote a post to all STM's about this subject.  These feelings like, am I really going to be able to do as good of a job with two, how do you "split" the love and comfort you provide, am I going to actually kill my husband this time?  I'll try to find the link, but it was really helpful to know that I wasn't alone in thinking my second BFP was much different than my first.
Me: unexplained infertility - annovulatory DH: testicular cancer survivor!! TTC since June 2009 BFP May 11, 2012 EDD January 24, 2013 June 1, 2012 - first u/s, heartbeat 124 BPM!! June 22, 2012 - heard the heartbeat 9w1d 181 BPM!! 24 hours of labor, 4 1/2 hours of pushing, and IT'S A BOY! Welcome to the world my miracle, we prayed and prayed for you, and we can't believe you're here!
  • Thanks ladies!! I have been a nauseous, hormonal wreck freaking out every time I feel a leak from this gel. Friday cannot come soon enough for a little peace of mind. Your comments are all helpful and I appreciate it!! You ladies are the best!!
