Re: Bodhi/Bode/Bodie

  • None of them are found in BTN.

Bodhi is a Sanskrit name meaning "Awakened" or "Enlightenment"
The Buddhist concept of Bodhi is spiritual awakening and freedom from the cycle of life.
Bodhi is also the name of the sacred ficus tree (ficus religiosa) under which Lord Buddha sat and obtained his enlightenment.

They're all terrible for a name - like a Hindu person in Chennai naming his/her son "Transubstantiation." But if you HAVE to use one, Bodhi is the correct spelling. Please don't use the Bode spelling because Bode Miller is an awful human being.

Bodhi: "Bodhi is the Pāli and Sanskrit word for the "awakened" or "knowing" consciousness of a fully liberated yogi, generally translated into English as "enlightenment". It is an abstract noun formed from the verbal root budh (to awake, become aware, notice, know or understand), corresponding to the verbs bujjhati (Pāli) and bodhati or budhyate (Sanskrit)."

    Bode: "Variant of Bodo."

Bodie: "Short form of Boden. Famous namesake: Bodie James Olmos (b. 1975)"

::seriously does not understand the love for this name::

Both recent celebrities used Bodhi, fwiw.
I want to name my son Beau and DH hates the spelling. I can't get behind Bo so I'm trying to think of a full name that we could use Bo as a nn.

  • bodie / Bode

  • TBH, I think that's a kind of silly reason to reach for a name like Bodhi when you have no other connection to the name. Just use Bo as a NN for whatever other name you come up with. It doesn't have to match the full name. We have 4 generations of boys in my family named George and only the first generation went by George. All the others have NNs, and only one of those is even related to the name George.
  • This name has always made me think of "body."
Now I'm going to have to google Bode Miller and see what's so awful about him.
Hm ... maybe you could do Boaz? Or I suppose that's asking for azz jokes.

Truthfully I actually like Bode...And while Bode Miller is a craptastic partner/possibly father I don't know he is an awful person. He grew up skiing at our local mountain and I really don't mind that association.

Bodhi (spelled like that) is nice, but I would think it odd if I met Bodhi and he wasn't at least part Indian.
  • I liken Boden...Bodhi looks confusing, Bode will forever be mispronounced, and Bodie looks like a nickname.
  • I love Bo has a nickname for Robert.

Boden was nixed by dh. I doubt Bode would be mispronounced here but nit sold on it.

Uhhhh. You can't dictate how people will respond to a public internet post. PP is right. It is awful.
I get that is just not helpful in answering my question. Plenty of times I've asked for feedback and take what I get.

  • I love the name Bodhi. Although I am not a practicing Buddhist, I've had some involvement in Buddhism and the meaning behind the name is the main reason I love it. There are a lot of names that have strong meanings but are still widely used and not necessarily recognized as a name of a certain background/religion. This name is definitely not one of those. IMO I would consider this when thinking about using the name. It's not common. People are going to ask about it. Anyone who knows anything about the name will probably assume you have some ties to Buddhism. You may not care about that at all. To each their own. Personally I think a name like that shouldn't be used without any ties to its meaning.
  • Just an FYI, Bo Jackson's given name is Vincent Edward. So you can really use Bo/Beau as a NN for just about anything.
  • My son is Boden nn Bo. We love it!

  • I know it's not "real," but I went to school with several guys named Bodi. Definitely easy to pronounce and much more attractive looking than Bode.
