Thrush

Who here has dealt with thrush already? What did it feel like? What did it look like (both on your nips and in baby's mouth)?

I still don't think we are necessarily dealing with it, but I'm also second guessing and doubting myself.

Tessa has white patches in her mouth, but they wipe away easily, and I am told real yeast will persist in the skin and not wipe away easily.

Related question: is it bad if I use gentian violet if I don't actually have yeast?

  • I'd make sure you actually have trush before trying the GV, it STAINS everything! White spots that wipe away do not sound like yeast.

if the white wipes away it's just milk (or spitup). Real thrush sticks around.

This. Take a qtip or popsicle stick and try to scrape off the white patch. If it comes off, its just milk. Thrush wont budge.

  • I second what the PPs have said. Also, i have had the yeast on my breast (with my DD and DS) and there is no question if you have it. The pain is intolerable during breast feeding as if someone was stabbing your nipples.

DD is on Nystatin right now for thrush. Her pedi wasn't 100% sure but the white doesn't wipe away or scrape away with a tongue blade. Her tongue is covered in a thin layer of white with a circular raised spot that is a bit thicker. I think we caught hers early and there is nothing on her gums or in her cheeks yet. I also haven't had any signs of it on my nipples yet...like I said I think we caught it early.

This exactly. The pediatrician caught it at DDs 2 wk check up and she has been on nystatin for 4 days and her tongue now looks back to normal. I had no clue I had it since I had no pain on my nipples but girlfriend eats at least 12 times a day and usually more so I'm sure I have it too.

Is it normal though for my son's tongue to be white just from drinking milk all day long? Or is the white tongue indicative of thrush? I'll show our Midwife at the 4 week visit but I assumed it was from the milk..

Also, the ones who dealt with thrush, did your LO get diaper rash and what did it look like?

  • we had a yeast diaper rash once when kiddo was a baby, and it was red, raised, bumpy and seemed very painful when wiping.  the bumps even started bleeding a tiny bit.  he would scream and writhe when i wiped him.  poor guy :(

  • A little white on the tongue is normal as long as it scrapes off. Our pediatrician knew our lo had thrush bc her tongue was coated in white front to back and it was super thick and hardly any scraped off.
