I am happy to announce that as of Tuesday 9:35 EST, the judge finalized our adoption of our son!
Here's the short version for the people that have not been stalking me here. We decided a little over a year ago to adopt after 2 years of fertility treatments. We chose an agency that was local and that worked with other states. Our home study was finished in June, we were matched in November, he was born on Dec 12 and we first held him 5 hours after he was born. We spent the next couple of weeks living in NICU 500 miles from home, then brought our son home. This was a closed adoption, but we did speak with the birth parents a couple of times before he was born. We met them for the first time at the hospital and spent about an hour total with them while she was in the hospital and have heard nothing from them since. We drove back with our parents to have the finalization proceedings in person. The proceedings took less than 5 minutes and the next hour was spent celebrating with the attorney, judge and our family in the courtroom.
We were blessed that this happened as quickly as it did. In the beginning it seemed like it was taking forever, but looking back it all went very quickly compared to some. To everyone that are currently going through the process or are considering the process, just keep thinking positive thoughts and the right thing will happen at the right time. The journey is a difficult one, but the outcome is a tremendous blessing.
Proud 40 year old, first time daddy!
