Breech question

Preggo brain is getting to me! I know we had a thread with info about this topic, so if anyone knows of it please point me in the right direction.

Yesterday we found out little man is still head up at 34 weeks. The MW said we will check again in 2 weeks. If he doesn't flip, she said we will plan a C/S. I am wondering:

Has anyone had a successful vaginal breech birth? Do I have to schedule a C/S or is it possible to wait it out? Does anyone have experience with a baby flipping this late in the game?

Any advice welcome about breech babies welcomed.

    I don't, but I think I remember @joules235 had information about flipping a baby.

    ETA:  correct tag would help!

  • Can you ask your midwives if they can flip the baby? Mine just told me today they will do that (externally) instead of c/s.

I have also heard there are chiropractors who can do this (specialty ones).

Sorry if this isn't very helpful...
  • My girl has been breech the entire time she still is head up facing me.

I am 32 weeks I got back in a few for US to see if she has flipped.

I talked to my Dr the other day to see about them flipping her.

    She said
    1. It is done at the hospital
    2. They give you an epi ( I think she said)
    3. 50% chance it works
    4. Baby could flip back
    5. Water could break
    6 could go into labor

There is only 1 Dr in my practice that is ok doing it.

This is my Dr office so not sure how others do it.

After talking to her for me not worth the risks. I would rather have c section. She is breech for a reason.

I would them be scheduled for the week before I am due.

She did say she could still flip so we will see but my gut tells me my little one is not going.

My Dr office will not deliver a breech baby.

I did discuss chiropractor with my Dr and I was thinking of trying that. Not sure yet.

Not sure if any of this helps

  • 34 weeks means there is still plenty of time for baby to flip. I have had a few friends with babies that are breech up until 39 weeks.
  • My kid flipped on his own at 37 weeks.

  • Our LO is currently frank breech, so I have been doing Spinning Babies exercises and saw a chiropractor today for the Webster technique in hopes we can encourage little man to flip. My OB will reassess position at 36 weeks and discuss options if necessary. I'd really like to avoid an ECV, so I'm trying everything I can!

    Hope your LO flips!

  • My first was breech and I wasn't a candidate for version. My second was frank breech and I delivered him vaginally, only because he was coming out when they got me in the room to start my csection (he was 7 weeks early).

  • Personally I wouldn't be ok with a planned CS until full term (39 weeks). Also, an ECV (where the doctor turns the baby) can be painful, but not always. Here's a good video of one https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=qT2jBxVoOQc

  • @dragonfly711 just curious, did your doctor explain what he/she meant by "she is breech for a reason"?

  • My frank breech baby just flipped to vertex, hoping she stays that way! If she hadn't flipped by my last appointment (34.5 weeks) I was planning to call an acupuncturist who does moxabustion, and a Webster chiropractor before going ahead with the version. I was willing to try anything to avoid a c-section, though I was also prepared to accept it if that was my only option. As PP have said, lots of good info on the spinning babies website. Good luck!

    @ ElTrain5
nope I just know that she has been, I think before she was transverse but now her head is by my sternum and she is facing me.  They dont seem concerned and said she could still flip so I have not really worried to much about it yet.  Oh my Dr did not say she is breech for a reason, I just said that.  I figure that if she is like that there must be a reason.  I am still deciding on doing acupuncture.

  • My friend had a version at 39 weeks.  She said it was painful, but worth it as baby turned head down and she went into labor two days later.  She said she would do it again if she had to in order to avoid a c-section.

    Married DH 7/30/11

    CSC arrived 5/7/12

    CHC arrived 6/2/14

  • Babies can change position at time, even during labor. I wouldn't stress yourself out about it, honestly.
  • #3 was breech until 36 weeks. I'm pretty sure I got her to flip myself. I was doing breech tilts, hot/cold packs, chiropractor adjustments etc.

I would have absolutely had an external version by my OB before resorting to a c/s
  • I don't have any experience but just wanted to say that video is incredible!

Agreed! @ElTrain5‌ that was a great video. That was clearly a very skilled practitioner!

I have witnessed a couple of these in nursing school and feel pretty strongly that the person attempting the ECV and their experience level in doing the procedure makes a huge difference!
  • DD was breech until sometime after 36 weeks (can't remember exactly when exactly, but I know that by 39 weeks she was vertex).  I remember being told at 36 weeks that "most" babies who are breach even that late turn them self, regardless of what you do.  I was told that I could go pay to do all those fancy things (chiro, etc), or save my money and have approximately the same chance that she would be vertex by delivery.

  • My MFM said baby can flip all the way up to 40wks but that in most cases its between 32 and 36.  Scheduling a CS at 36 seems to be jumping the gun a bit I think...

My LO just flipped (I felt it, it was weird!) and Im 35wks, if that helps...

  • Do at home exercises to try to get it to flip I heard bad things about getting it done in the hospital so I would not go that route. If they can't flip on their own there could be a reason so at that point I think CS would be safest for baby.
  • My OB's office is not really helpful with this stuff. I told them I had concerns and wanted to know if they would do a version or try to flip her externally, and she said sometimes they will do it but not usually on FTMs(??) so if at my u/s on Friday we find that she is still breech (this would be the third u/s showing that, if it does) I am going to try the chiropractor route and spinning babies techniques. Good luck!

  • Babies can be delivered breech if you have a doctor or MW that is comfortable doing so. I would look at some other ways to get him to flip. I have had friends have success with acupuncture and seeing a chiropractor. Go to www.spinningbabies.com there are a lot of ideas there.
  • The baby can definately flip yet.  I am 38 weeks and today and was just at the doctor yesterday and my baby flipped.  He was head up on Friday when i was there but he flipped over the weekend.  I am not sure if any of the things i tried helped but it might be worth it.  I laid on the couch with like 4 pillows under my bottom twice a day for 20 mins.  They say the gravity chage for them can make the baby want to flip.  Also i sat in a warm bath for like an hour.  I read that helps too.  Good Luck!
  • Whoa that ECV video was awesome! That is so cool. I don't know how that wasn't painful for her because when my girls flipped I thought I was dying lol!
