Ammonia buildup in wool

Anyone dealt with this? DS seems to be getting a mild ammonia burn on his upper legs from our wool soaker, so I've temporarily taken it out of the rotation and just using a Capri for now. I've done a hot water strip on our ON fitteds, but obviously I don't want to do that with wool.

The wool care sheet I have from GMD says to soak with a bit of vinegar. But I've got hard water and I'm not sure if this is okay. Has anyone tried this? Should I just soak and re-lanolize like crazy?

  • I'd just rinse and soak it like crazy. Then wash and sanitize like normal.

  • Thanks ... I did this last week and the burning seems to be less, but maybe I need to do it again. I was out of Eucalan and had to use a regular hand-washing detergent. Which didn't emulsify the lanolin very well -- it got all gloppy. Hopefully my new supply of wool wash comes soon and I can try again!
  • I always use the grapefruit, lavender or eucalyptus lanoline soap.i also I put I few drops of the oil while they are on the water.

  • Eucalan is so expensive here, so I found something called Mitchell's Woolly Wash. It is made here in the UK and is supposed to be high in lanolin. But it's not scented. Do you think it would be okay to add a drop or two of EO to the lanolinizing step? I'm guessing it probably doesn't matter, but just curious if anyone else has done this.
