Cloth Diapering

Help, first bout of diarrhea!

Little girl is five months old now and has been overall healthy. Well this AM she woke up with a dirty diaper, I noticed it was a little off, not one solid color and mucus-ie in spots. Figured it was from allergies and moved on. Well the next diaper change I thought was just wet, nope diarreah. Almost all water. I figured since she is started on solids I would try a BRAT (minus the T) diet and see what happens the rest of the day. She also suddenly developed a diaper rash, but just between the cheeks. So should I keep her in cloth or put her in sposies? I don't care about stains, I guess I was thinking along the yeast lines of contaminating the diaper. What do you think?

  • I forgot to say she is acting fine, no fever, not clingy. Just her normal self.

  • I would imagine the redness is just from the harshness of the diarrea. The same way your bum gets raw with diarrea.  I'd use something a little thicker than coconut oil if I had it.  I like Grandma El's for this.

The only things I have that are thicker are not cd safe. Can I use a fleese liner and a non cd safe diaper cream. I have dr. Smiths, Bert's bees and aquapfor. Eta-- this is the first rash since two weeks old, that is why I don't have any cd safe except coconut oil and no cd shops for about 3 hr drive.

  • I wouldn't switch to disposables for that.  The redness between the cheeks is, like PP said, probably just from the harshness of diarrhea, coupled with the fact that she's probably going more often?  I'd make sure she's completely dry between changes, and then put on some kind of thicker diaper cream (I like CJs).  So just change more often and if you can, give that little booty air time!  I don't think you need to worry about yeast at this stage in the game.

  • If you don't have anything thicker that is cd safe then I would try coconut oil first.  Just apply liberally.  I'd probably put it on thick enough to have it almost running off.  You could probably easily come up with Waxalene with a run to the store but I'd go ahead and order something cd safe that is a little thicker just to have on hand for the future.

  • A baking soda bath is good for treating rashes caused by loose, frequent, or acidic poop.

    It all revolves around you.
  • Thanks for all the ideas! I think I will try liberal amounts of coconut oil, and the banking soda bath to night. The closest store is still an hour away, so I'll have hubby stop on his way home this evening and look for the waxylene.
