FTM and LO first poop!

More natural care related than cd...

Just curious if it's worth it to put some coconut oil on babes butt when he's born to help ease gettinv the meconium off. I've heard of ppl doing this but I'm not sure if it's worth it to bring some along to the hospital :) thoughts?!

  • I am a FTM but they recommended it in my childbirth class.

  • I was way to out of it to even think about making them put anything on his butt.  Of course, I had a cs and had problems.  I suggest that if you are really worried about it then make it YH's job to remember.  With that said I didn't think it was that hard to clean the meconium off and I think you'll have more important things to worry about like latching and getting some sleep.  Even if baby is rooming in call the nurses to come change the first couple diapers.

  • We didn't find meconium too hard to clean from his skin.

This. But I didn actually change many diapers in the hospital. So what do I know?

  • I don't think I changed a diaper until we got home, I was so out of it at the hospital.
  • In the prenatal class we took, the Doula that taught it recommended putting something on their butts, even if using disposables, because it can be hard to clean off their butts if it's sticky.

We have to bring disposable diapers to the hospital for delivery so I'm planning on bringing Live Well Non-Petroleum Jelly to spread on while he's in disposables, just in case it is sticky and hard to clean off his butt. He'll be in cloth once we get home, so I was planning on coconut oil until all the meconium has passed.

  • I would not think it worth the trouble. It was not that hard to get off, and diapers are easy when they are that little, it's not like they are trying to escape like they will a few months later.

This. We just used a wet washcloth to clean it off.

  • DH did most of the early diaper changes, but he didn't have any problems with the meconium.  I wouldn't want something extra to worry about, so I wouldn't do it.

  • M pooped almost immediately after being born. No time to do that even if we wanted to...I say not worth it

  • I am bringing something this time. Logan had a horrible rash that turned into a nasty yeast rash. They had NO paste of any kind. A nurse gave me Johnson baby lotion. :(

I don't know if it's because of the tar poop, but next time I'll use it just in case. Seeing his poor butt blistered and bleeding broke my heart! The doctors checked him every day and didn't say a word about his rash. We were there 6 days. After getting home to some cream, and it only getting worse, I took him to the doctor. I was pissed!
