Lennon Joy's birth story

On Monday April 21st our little love decided it was time to come meet us :) This is the story of her arrival!

Monday morning was just another day, I decided to go out so I wasn't home wondering when baby would come. After reading and sipping a decaf latte at Starbucks for an hr or so I went shopping for a few items. Still just felt like a normal day, no signs of impending labor at all. I arrived home and relaxed a bit and DW arrived home from work at 3:30. She had been pretty sick for days and she came home early to relax a bit. At 4:15pm a had a few contractions but didn't think too much about them...by 5pm they started coming regularly and quickly so we started timing them. When we realized they were about 3-5 min apart we called the midwife and our doula.Because it was my first labor we expected a long labor... But the baby had a different idea! The midwife and doula arrived by 8pm. I was having regular intense contractions, and they quickly began prepping. DW was doing an awesome job supporting me, reminding me to breathe for baby and helping prep for the birth. By 8:30 I was feeling "pushy" and my midwife said if I wanted a water birth I better get in the tub!

I had her check my dilation, although she said she thought I was very close...and sure enough 9.5 cm!! I couldn't believe how quickly things were going. What happened to early labor anyways?? ;)

The birth tub helped ease some of the discomfort and I started pushing by 9pm. The room had dim lights, candles, my birth banner that friends and family made to support me and of course my awesome birth team that included my DW , midwife , midwifes apprentice, doula and birth photographer. Mt doula was a godsend. She knew exactly what I needed before I even knew it myself! The cold wash clothes with lavender were so helpful to cool me down. I pushed and pushed some more both in the rub and also in the bathroom a bit.

My midwife mentioned I had a few options to help baby along a bit. To break my water, and /or use a labor link (a rope type thing I pull on, with someone pulling the other end.. The rug of war type action helps you push). I had her break my water first then I opted tontry the labor link which helped me push more efficiently. My wife was on the other side and my birth team kept cheering me on telling me to pull her in the tub! She claims I was quite close a few times!

After three hrs of pushing baby entered the world! She wasn't breathing at first but my midwife was right on top of it and we heard her cry... And I fell in love instantly.I started nursing her and delivered the placenta and then got to check to see what our team green baby was...I was SO shocked it was a girl!!! I was up and out of the tub shortly after and showering before heading upstairs to the bedroom for baby's assessment an weight.

Lennon Joy weighed 6lb 12oz and was 19 3/5 in long. Born at 11:59pm. I was happy to receive the news that i didn't tear at all..the water in combination with the long pushing phase and counter pressure from my midwife were helpful in that department!

Little Lennon has completely stolen our hearts, and is a complete joy. Her middle name suits her well! I couldn't be happier with my birth experience and I am so happy to share my story here! Thanks for all your well wishes upon the arrival of our rainbow baby!
