Bradley Birth Method?

Hi there,

Is anyone considering the Bradley Birth Method or used it for past pregnancies/deliveries?  It looks like the standard classes are 12 weeks, so I guess I need to get it together and decide soon if I am going this route.  Does anyone have any opinions or experiences to share?

Thanks!
Mandy

ETA: Cross-posting to PAL because duh.

ETA#2: Adding that I am interested in natural childbirth and like the idea of it, but I am not 100% committed to it. An epidural could definitely be in my future.  Given that, would I still get something out of Bradley classes?

  • I have had surgeries in the past and have been slow to recover (and basically a big baby) so I'm thinking natural childbirth wouldn't be for be, but I was still curious about the Bradley method and what it's all about. I hope you get some good info!

  • If you're interested in even possibly pursuing no meds, I don't think it would hurt to take it and learn some techniques.

  • I read the book and took a natural birthing class from a doula (not Bradley) and found it really informative. I ended up with an emergency c/s and no labour, so I have no idea how it might've helped in labour.

  • I took it and found it helpful. I will say that I don't really feel like there was a "method" per se... like no tricks, just a lot of tips for how to stay calm and deal with the discomfort in labor. What was also very valuable is that a lot of the class is devoted to explaining exactly what is taking place, and when and why. The reasoning being that it will help you to take control of your labor process if you know what's happening, and to make informed decisions with your healthcare provider. To that end, they also spend a lot of time on patient advocacy, and the ways to communicate to the hospital staff what you want and the right questions to ask to make sure you can keep to a natural birth plan.

We ended up successfully going natural (though it was a home birth so admittedly I had no choice!) but I think the Bradley method was a good training and prep for us.
