Do you top off your baby before you go to bed?

My DS has been going to bed around 8:30 after his bottle (give or take 30 minutes) and wakes up to eat somewhere between 12:00-1:00, 3:00-4:00, and then 6:30-7:00.  I was just wondering what time you typically feed your LO and put them to bed and if any of you wake your little one to top them off before you go to bed or just let them sleep.

    The last 3 days have been;
    Get home at 530
Nurse (or pump if he had a bottle recently)
    Play talk cuddle whatever
    Bath at 830-9
    Nurse
    Sleep at 10:30
Wake up at either 3 or 4
Nurse for like 10 min tops/diaper change
    Wake up at 6
Diaper change and nurse if he acts like he wants it. Normally for 5 min and he's out again. -- i guess u could call this one a "top off"

Edit to add- LO is 6 weeks

  • Liam falls asleep around 9ish and I'll let him sleep on me or in his swing in the living room with us till I'm ready to go to bed, around 11,and I always wake him to change, put PJs on, feed and put him in his crib. I could probably just let him sleep but I figure since I'm still up I might as well. He sleeps really well ( 6 hr stretch, feed then 4 more hours) so it seems to work for us.
  • I have basically the same schedule as op and no I never wake a sleeping baby :)

People seem to think I'm nuts, but our LO goes down for the night at 11pm. That's the time I go to bed... so.... yeah.

She naps until about 6pm, nurses, fusses at her daddy for a bit, nurses, then we give her a bath at 8:30 or 9pm, put her in PJs, and I nurse her for as long as she wants. Sometimes she'll fall asleep nursing, so I just hold her for a while so DH and I can watch TV or talk while she snoozes. Once we're ready to head to bed I put her in her swing (where she sleeps), and get myself ready for bed. She usually wakes up at that point but as long as she's content to watch her mobile above the swing, I don't pick her up again. She usually falls asleep on her own. If she seems hungry or fussy, I nurse her in bed until she falls asleep again.

She sleeps until 6:30am. Some nights she wakes around 4 to eat, sometimes she doesn't.

  • I feed LO when he is hungry.
Which generally means when he's awake.

I don't know how some of you 'dream feed' because I've never been able to get my kids to open their mouths if they are asleep. And if I have to wake them enough to get them to open up, then they aren't sleeping so technically it isn't a dream feed anymore, is it?

So he goes to bed when he passes out. This is usually after 9pm, could be 11pm.
I go to bed shortly after both kids are asleep.
LO eats as many times as he wants to MOTN. Sometimes that is every 1.5-2 hours. Last night it was bed at 10, eat at 2, 6 and 11am. (He was tired - growing is hard stuff)

    He is 5.5 weeks.
  • We are a late night group too! She eats pretty frequently, at least once an hour from 7/8pm until 10pm or so. We typically head to bed around 10-11pm. We get LO swaddled and changed, I feed her, and then we read her a book. I snuggle her in bed until she falls asleep, usually around 11:30pm. I put her in her PnP and she usually sleeps until 4 or 5am. I feed her again and put her back to bed. She wakes up again around 7am and then typically sleeps again 7:30am-10am.

  • In glad to hear I'm not the only late bedtime. We start her bedtime "routine" around 8:30 (bath, nurse, PJs) and then take her info our room and nurse again until she pretty much passes out. She'll sleep from 10:30-3:30 or 4:30, be back asleep by 4:39 or 5 and sleeps until 7.

  • my lo is only 10 days old, but we will give him a good feeding right before we all go to bed (10 ish) and that will get us around 3 hrs of sleep before the next feeding. he always wakes up and is hungry when we pick him up so topping off hasn't been an option yet....its full feeding all the time.

  • I have no schedule. I just feed on demand. But if he happens to be asleep when I go to bed I'll dream feed him otherwise it seems I'm back up within the hour. My boobs let me know.

  • Ours are ariund the same age and I could have written out the exact same routine... eats 8:30 or so then bed, eats 12-1, 3-4, 7-8... no top off unless he wakes up earlier than normal i.e growth spurtting

  • I don't "put him down for bed" for the night until DH and I are ready to go to bed, even though he'll be sleeping all evening still. So his last evening feeding is usually around 10 or 11 at night, then I'll get him down as soon as I can and go to bed. That way DH and I get some relaxing cuddles with LO after DS1 is asleep while we watch TV or whatever, and I maximize my own sleeping time.

We did the same thing with DS1 and FWIW, he never went to bed earlier than 10 pm until he was a year old and dropped to 1 nap per day, and would sleep until 9 or 10 in the morning. (Not STTN, mind you.) That's just the schedule he set for himself.

  • We're another late-night family here.

We don't really have a bed-time ritual. We swaddle him up in the evening during his fussy time to help calm him and transition him into night-time mode. I put him down in his moses basket when I'm ready to go to bed myself, usually around 11. He almost invariably wakes up again and fusses when I put him down, so I feed him one last time until he drifts off, then I put him down again. He wakes up that time, too, but usually at that point is content to chill in his basket and go back to sleep on his own. By this time it's usually midnight. He then will sleep through until anywhere between 5am and 7am. I feed him again and he'll usually go back down for another few hours when I'm ready to get up myself.

  • I feed her when she is hungry and let her sleep when she is tired. We don't wake her up for anything.
  • Late night here too. We start to put DS1 in his bed around 9:30 but DS2 doesn't normally pass out until 10-11 or like last night 12:15. I nurse whenever he's hungry.

This is us exactly. Except I don't wake her. She just wakes up when we move her. 6 hour stretch, then 4.
