Take your child to work day

It's take your child to work day at my office. It's so cute to see all the kids here. Mine are too young (they have to be 7 to come here) but I think it's great. I remember going with my dad several times as a kid/teen.
Does your office participate? Do you plan to bring your kids? Did you go when you were a kid?

Re: Take your child to work day

  • Our office offers it but it always falls during standerized testing week for the schools here so none of the kids can come.  I keep saying we should lower the age group so kids can come, but then we won't get any work done.

  • My office doesn't offer it which I think really stinks.   I never participated but I don't remember this from when I was a child - either it was after my time or my dad's company didn't do it?  My mom was a SAHM.

  • Our office has a camp set up for kids 7 -12 during public school vacation weeks.  The kids spend a little time with their parents, and then spend the rest of the day playing games, arts and crafts, etc.

Most of my coworkers have kids that are either too old or too young to participate, so I'm not really sure how it is.
  • My organization hosts a half day program for the kids but they're supposed to be at least five. Some of my coworkers are sneaking in their tall 4 year olds but there's no way I could have brought my 2 year old. I think it will be fun when she's older.

I visited both my parents' work fairly frequently as a kid but I'm not sure if it was ever part of an official "take your kid to work" day or if my parents had some scheduling issue that required bringing me along for the day. My mom worked at a museum and they had certain days that were just for staff & family with a lot of fun activities for the kids. I loved that. If I was with her on a regular work day, I usually played on the old school typewriter or colored in an empty cube, then she'd give me a special tour during her lunch break. My dad's firm was a bit more boring - I usually just read, colored, ate from the pantry, or played with whichever secretary thought I was cute and was willing to entertain me for 20 minutes. I was a pretty quiet kid, so I was taken into the office more often than my siblings.

  • Did they do take your kids to work day in the 80s/early 90s? I don't remember doing it, though I would go to work with my dad on occasion for other reasons, and my mom was an elementary teacher so I knew what her workplace was like.

My office doesn't officially do it, and I can't imagine how boring it would be for DD to come and watch me type on my computer all day or sit on a conference call.  So I don't expect to ever do it.

  • I participated back when it was only take your daughter to work and not kid. When I first went with my mom they did nothing formal and I chatted with her coworkers and helped her copy stuff. After the first year or so her office started doing more programs and less go bug you parent all day.

My company participates we have a large engineering component so they usually have the kids build something and do scheduled activities for most of the day. I now work from home though so I think it loses a little in translation:)

  • @QueSrah‌ I don't know if they did it in the 80's. I went with my dad when I was in grade school in the 90's. And it was a big formal program at his office.
