Teething/Cold Question

Did any of your babies get a cold while getting teeth in?

Do you think it's correlated or pure coincidence?

Jackson was up all night with an awfully runny nose. He is normally a phenomenal sleeper but he was completely restless. I couldn't put him down. His snot is all clear (literally pouring out) and he has been sneezing, so I definitely think it's a cold but the last time he had a cold he was green/brown on the snot front, so it seems a bit different. When I asked DH to check if he felt any teeth after reading a bit this morning, he mentioned he did think something was starting.

I've read a bunch of sites that correlate the two but also some websites that have shot it down.

Did any of this happen with you?

Re: Teething/Cold Question

Not to me but one of the moms in my mommy group said she realized her baby was teething because she had a perpetually runny nose. Like you said, clear snot and it never stopped. She said it wasn't a cold because the baby wasn't stuffy/uncomfortable/had no other symptoms.
It's hard to say if he has other symptoms and what I could peg them on. I say he has a cold because he sneezes, but he does sneeze pretty frequently. The only thing that's realllly making me lean toward a cold is that his eye is all of a sudden very red. But that also makes me think he could be having an allergic reaction. Poor boo boo :(

eta: He's only ever been sick once before and it's been completely different that's why I figured I'd ask.

  • LO is teething right now and has had a runny nose like crazy! She has no other cold like symptoms. I have read that the extra salivation production that happens during teething can cause the runny nose. I also read that the two have nothing to do with each other. With how many babies experience the two at the same time I think they must have something to do with each other.

  • He tried asparagus for the first time last night and he ate off of the grill as well, which we haven't done before. But the nose running was actually starting before dinner. The eye just started a little while ago.

He hasn't been exposed to any additional allergens, but we do have dogs and a cat in the house so hopefully he's not developing anything.

We'll probably just watch it today and take him tomorrow if he's still looking miserable. I just was wondering, really aside from the eye, if the nose running could be the possibility of teething, but after thinking about it more and your posts, it does seem more like an allergan.

  • @starscream DH just reminded me that he gets the same way with regular colds. His eyes tear up and one tends to get puffy. Just wondering if it's similar. Either way he sent me another picture and his eye already looks a little better than that.

    Hopefully it's just a cold.

It does seem like there is a correlation, to me anyway, between colds and teething, so hopefully it turns into a tooth appearing (finally). :)

  • 100% - full congestion, runny nose, the works
  • C started with a snotty nose, few days later her first tooth came in, and 2 days later her second.

    So true for us.

Any watery, red eyes with the colds/runny nose?

He looks like he'd be crying his eyes out, but everything is just water works today! Notice the fingers in his mouth too. :(    (eta: It seemed to get better after a nap and as time went on but now it's gotten worse again :( Really hoping its not an allergy. etax2: DH says he hasn't been rubbing his eyes at all either. So weird. )

  • Poor guy! Hope he feels better. Maybe something got in his eye and it is irritated? You could always put a call out to your pedi for peace of mind

  • @msspeedymarie I wonder the same thing about their immune systems being down while it's happening. I'm sorry it's happening to you guys too! Hope M feels better soon!!!

He definitely has at least one coming through. I think I feel a second one.

And he feels better for a while and then gets worse and then feels better again. And his temp hasn't gone about 99.8. So weird. Hopefully it goes away as quick as it came!

  • My LO has two new teeth coming in and a constant runny nose as well as a limitless amount of explosive diapers. Dr said his unending supply of loose stool can be attributed to his new teeth. Going to be a long couple of months.

YUP! I've been okay with this whole no teeth so far thing. It's hitting full force!

  • Yes! He's had the full onset of runny nose, congestion and double ear infections while teething. Makes for a lot of sleepless nights and fussy days. Good luck with your LO!

    Thank you! You too!

  • My daughter looks just like your son with the red watery eyes and cold like symptoms. I am still trying to figure out if it is teeth or just a cold. I kinda, maybe see her first tooth but not 100 % on that.

We definitely have two that are now showing this afternoon. Crazy! Hopefully it's just teeth for you too!

  • So far DS has gotten a snotty nose and rosy cheeks right before popping a tooth or two.

I am so puzzled. No one else has caught the cold which makes me think teeth, but she is so congested and raspy its hard to imagine it is only teeth. Either way hopefully we are done with it soon. This is a good lesson no 2 kids are the same. DS popped all his teeth with no signs or symptoms, it was wonderful :)
