Breastfeeding

Latch question

I have a question regarding latch. I have a 5 week old little girl and I have always had issues with getting a good latch. She is usually fussy around feeding time and so after struggling to get her latched I usually just let it go even if it hurts. I always used the football hold but have now switched to the front crossover. Is it too late to teach her the right latch. My nipples are so sore most of the time and I really want to enjoy breastfeeding. Any advice is very much appreciated!!

Re: Latch question

  • I have seen an LC a few times, but I am a little embarrassed to go back because I feel like I should have it down by now.. I will have to try to feed her before she is starving.

  • don't be embarrassed and don't give up! BFing takes practice for both baby and mom and there is a steep learning curve at the beginning. you don't want to have a bad latch as it is painful for you and the baby doesn't get milk as efficiently.

i think videos can be helpful with this. try this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHs2Ql5Kylo
here's a list that has resources to look at, including more videos: https://kellymom.com/ages/newborn/bf-basics/latch-resources/
  • I also wanted to say not to be embarrassed. The LCs are there because they want to help! And it's definitely not too late.

I know it's hard, but try not to just ignore the pain and let LO nurse with a bad latch too often. I made that mistake and then had to be patient while my nipples took their good old time to heal. The Lansinoh soothes gel pads helped a lot in those days.

Don't give up! You can do this :)

  • Just wanted to share my story. Both of my LOs ended up having their jaws misaligned during a vaginal delivery. We were referred to a chiropractor who was able to place the jaw back correctly by using his finger in the mouth. I was skeptical at first but then the latch issue was resolved and there was a complete night and day difference. No more pain . Just something to look into.

  • Thanks for the advice everyone! I made an appointment with the LC on Monday, so hopefully she can help me out.
