Cloth Diapering

Non-sewer replacing BG elastic

I always thought it would be the aplix on my BG 4.0 diapers that would give out, but it turns out that the elastic is the first thing to go for me. I don't sew AT ALL - not even buttons, really, though I guess I might be able to if I set my mind to it :) So I have no sewing supplies, and could really use some advice.

Any suggestions for types of needles? Type of thread? Should I get a thimble? Will any 1/4" elastic do, or do I need to look for a specific kind?

If you know of any sites giving tips on how to sew this kind of thing by hand (basics like getting the seam started, finishing it off, etc.), I would love to see them! (I have looked through some tutorials on how to replace the elastic on BG, but they tend to say something like "sew both ends of elastic to the seam allowance," assuming you know how to do that... and I don't!)

TIA! This is all very new for me.

Re: Non-sewer replacing BG elastic

  • I used this tutorial. It doesn't require much sewing and was pretty easy.

I have used braided and non-roll elastic and liked the non-rolled one better but most people recommend the braided one. If you are going to use the above tutorial, any thread will work.

If I were you I would go to Joanns during an off period and ask one of the workers for help. Bring in a diaper, explain what you need to do and have them point you in the right direction. They have always been so helpful and have never steered me wrong when I have really laid out what I need to do.

If you decide you really don't want to do it, you could always see if there is a local momma who would be willing to help you out or there is the Diaper Doc. She has actually done a repair for me and I was really happy.

  • I just googled for a tutorial, and it was super easy, for the BGs, at least, and I'm not a sewer or any kind of crafty at all!

  • I'm a little bit crafty when I need to be, but I used the tutorials and it is pretty easy.  I used swimsuit elastic since it in theory is more resilient in chemicals/lots of washing.  I grabbed the only off white thread I had, which I think is a cotton blend.  I have a multi pack of needles and picked a medium one.  It takes me about 20-30 minutes per diaper depending on how distracted I am.  I usually just do one or two diapers a night after both kids have gone to bed.
