3rd Trimester

Odd Sharp Pain

I asked this over in the 1st Trimester board, I thought I'd ask here as well. This is my second pregnancy and it true when they your second can be completely different from your first. I'm 8 weeks along today and yesterday and this evening I experienced the oddest thing. Thus far I have experienced the normal crampy feeling you get when your uterus is growing and stretching. It was worse a couple weeks ago but has since seemed to stop for the most part. Nothing too major or abdormal. But, last night I reached across my counter in the kitchen to grab something and the right side of my stomach touched the counter. As soon as I made contact I had an immediate sharp shooting pain. I jumped back in pain. It was an instant pain but was gone just as quickly as it came. It is really hard to explain. It was really odd. I didn't really think much of it until tonight. After I got out of the shower and was putting lotion on, my 3 yr old wanted to rub my belly. She rubbed for a couple seconds and then while she was rubbing it happened again. I jumped away from her in pain (felt horrible bc I scared her. ..oops!). I'm pretty sure it was the same spot as last night and it was the same pain, came and went, and I feel nothing the anymore. Does anyone have any insight on what it could have been? Thanks!

Re: Odd Sharp Pain

  • Round ligament pain can be worse in second pregnancies.

  • Yea, I get the whole round ligament pain. But, this pain happened when my stomach was touched (first when I leaned up against the counter and then when daughter was rubbing my belly). Has anyone experienced that before?

Yes, I just asked my doctor about this last week. I randomly have sharp pains when my belly is touched or sometimes even just grazed. He said it could be a number of things.

    RLP
    A stretched or pulled muscle
    Pain from my fibroid
The baby sitting on a nerve, or a pinched nerve... I can't remember exactly which he said.

You should ask your doctor at your next visit though if you're concerned.

ETA: reading fail! Didn't see that she was only 8 weeks along.

  • I remember too early on with this, my second pregnancy my stomach felt much more sensitive when it was bumped or touched, but nothing major has happened.  It wouldn't hurt to ask your doctor about it at your next appointment though.

  • this is my second pregnancy also and the RLP was much worse this time around.
