Who has had ECV / version done?

Sadly, today I learned little man is still breech but I have a good amount of amniotic fluid (but not too much) and baby is measuring well, so other than my anterior placenta, I am a perfect candidate for it.  There are lots of posts about breech babies but has anyone actually had version done? Anything you can share?

Re: Who has had ECV / version done?

  • I had one attempted with my first.  It wasn't too bad, they will pry hook you up to an IV and monitor you the whole time with ultrasound.  It is uncomfortable as they are trying to maneuver the baby around. I had two doctors do it one was pushing on the bum and the other was controlling the head.  It failed for me- but that was because, as we later discovered, I had a uterine septum.  But, I think the procedure is definitely worth it, versus going for a c/s.  Good luck!!

  • My NMW had a successful one about a week ago. She said it was painful, and it left her with some bruises. She was also monitored for at least an hour after it was done to be sure her LO stayed put and that everything was fine. She's now wearing this wrap around her belly that is supposed to help keep LO from flipping back.

It’s not that I don’t like you, it’s that I don’t know you. Stranger Danger.
  • I had one done just yesterday. The attempt failed though and my little guy is still breech. They gave me the terbutaline subcutaneously so I didn't even need an IV. The procedure itself was very uncomfortable and painful. My midwife and the OB tried to get my baby to turn for about 15 minutes total. I would recommend practicing some breathing/relaxation exercises beforehand as it was very hard for me to not tense up with every manipulation attempt. My belly is still a little sore and I have some bruises. Not all ECVs are like mine though, my doctor said that a lot of times all it takes is to lift the baby's butt out of the pelvis and kind of nudge the top half and they'll flip. Even though it didn't work for me and it was painful, I would do it again in the future if needed! Good luck!
  • I had one with my first. We waited till I was 39 weeks because if it worked then she would induce me and if it failed we would go ahead with the c/s since I was already in the O.R. and I already had the epidural. I also had an anterior placenta, my doc wasn't too concerned about it. It didn't work for me but I am glad I tried. DS had a big head and I think that is why he didn't turn. Good luck! I hope baby turns for you!!

Following as I was about to post the same...I will have one may 5 or 6 for my long time breech. Same exact as you- anterior placenta and good fluid. Can I ask what type of breech everyone's was versus if it was a success or not? Mine is frank and I have read complete (so Indian style legs) is the most successful. Also had you dropped at the time of the version? I am still extremely high so I'm wondering if that means it may be easier to turn or not since her bum isn't remotely engaged.

My baby is not engaged AT ALL and he's complete breech so the doctor has high hopes.  I'll be sure to post tomorrow afternoon how it goes!
  • No advice but wishing you ladies the best of luck!

  • I opted not to try ECV but mine is frank breech with somewhat low fluid so the chances of success would be slim.

  • My little guy was frank breech, not engaged, lots of amniotic fluid and he's a little small for his gestational age. My ECV still failed, he seems pretty content being curled up with his head underneath the right side of my ribs!

I'm going in next week for an epidural and they will try the version again. If it works, I'll be induced right away. If it fails again I'll just have the c section right away. So that might be an option for you too if your first ECV fails.
  • I go in next week for my ECV. I will get an epidural and they said I would be at the hospital for at least 4 hours after the procedure, if not more for monitoring. This is my second baby, and I am hoping he will turn, but like Sam0905, he seems pretty happy underneath my ribs. He was head down at 32 weeks, but when we did another ultrasound at 35 he was back up.

I have mine now scheduled for this coming Tuesday and I don't get any drugs unless I am contracting steadily (I get 1-2 and hour now so not for that) my original plan was to maybe schedule at 39 and induce if she turns but being a FTM it seems more prudent I try earlier. Nervous as hell though but good to read about these experiences.

Sadly, I was a no go.  They got the baby transverse but he flipped himself rght back to breech. :/
My c-section is scheduled for a week from today but I'm still crossing my fingers he flips before!
  • My baby was breech at 37 weeks and they wanted him flipped by 38 weeks or else they wanted to schedule a section for 39 weeks. I did everything I could to flip him. I went to the chiropractor (first time ever) and they used the Webster technique. I used a moxi stick (Chinese herb burned near the pinky toes), inversion exercises, swimming, sitting on exercise ball.... And he flipped. I noticed movement after a 20 minute inversion so I think that is when he flipped.
I too have anterior placenta and good fluid (18). If he had not flipped, I was going to ask them to try to do it manually. They didn't seem to want to though when we previously discussed it because I've got a lot of abdominal fat and anterior placenta (could cause a bleed/detachment), and the success rate isn't great. I'm glad he flipped though, and now hope to get him to stay this way!

I've tried swimming, the chiropractor, inversion excercises... I'm a little creeped out by the moxibustion but I've tried everything else.

They even had him transverse today and he pushed himself back to breech. :/
  • I did all of the "natural" methods starting at 34 weeks or so - inversion exercises, chiropractor, moxibustion, playing music to my crotch (my midwife suggested this - seriously), etc, etc. Finally did the ECV earlier this week and it didn't work. I suppose he could still turn on his own in the next 6 days before I'm induced/ have to have a c section but I've already come to terms that he will probably remain breech. I'm at peace knowing that I tried literally everything I could.
