Pregnant after 35

First trimester symptoms

According to my doc, I am 5w1d as of yesterday.

The only symptoms I've had so far are:
1. mild cramping and "stretching" feelings in the nether region
2. mood swings (I've cried at a tire commercial)
3. burping. Holy gosh, I'm burping a lot.
3a. Verps--those vomit-burps that slightly burn the back of your throat
4. an slight aversion to bananas, my usual breakfast go-to item. Now it induces my gag reflex.
5. major fatigue at the end of the day.

But no throwing up. No sore breasts. Does that show up later or is it like everyone says: "Every pregnancy is different."

Just wondering if anyone has anything to add.

Re: First trimester symptoms

  • Very true that every pregnancy is different. When I was pregnant with my son, my first symptom was nausea and vomiting, followed soon by fatigue and a desperate need for tacos! This time, my breasts have been killing me for three weeks (never happened at all last time), I just started with the nausea, and the taco cravings are back!

  • My first sign to me that I was pregnant was the lack of symptoms. I normally have sore boobs right before AF but they weren't sore and AF was due so I tested and BFP. The sore boobs came later.

  • I had all your same symptoms except no banana aversion and major breast pain. I did not start throwing up until I was 7 weeks and even then it was mostly from bad acid reflux. I'm 23 weeks and still have all those same symptoms (I am constantly burping and I hate it). The vomiting stopped around 15 weeks.

  • Oh god the burping! That's how my coworker knew I was PG! I burp like a line backer. And I break out like a 13 year old! Both are better than throwing up though which thankfully I have never had to experience while pregnant.

  • Each woman is different, but i have had nausea (not to the point of vomiting, thank god), horribly sore breasts, and fatique...and TMI, I am very constipated.

due my age and IVF, I am on progesterone so some of those could also be caused by that, as well

  • Congrats on your pregnancy, and welcome (belatedly)!  I hope things are still going well!

You might be lucky and never have serious nausea or vomiting - or it could come on strong in a couple weeks ... people report so many different experiences!  Also lots of people report symptoms coming and going and changing a lot during those first few weeks which is anxiety-producing but apparently really common/normal.

I only threw up maybe 2 or 3 times (plus had either a 12-24 stomach bug or food poisoning once but that was 2nd tri.) in all.  I also found I didn't want sweet stuff as much as normal (which totally changed 2nd and 3rd tri.!) or even mildly sweet things like my normal very healthy breakfast cereal weren't so good in the morning.  Kindof like your banana aversion.  Saltier and richer/higher fat things made me feel a lot better.  Like, triscuits, and breakfast egg wraps (from Tim Horton's with the savory sauce they have since discontinued ... something about that totally settled my stomach, though!  The chipotle sauce they have isn't a bad substitute though).    On the other hand, many, many people said they felt they could only eat carbs and that sweet things helped settle their stomachs.  For a lot of us it helped to avoid ever getting really hungry.  Little snacks often.

    Good luck with everything!

  • With my first pregnancy and loss, I was nauseated all the time, and wind would make my nipples hurt. With my second pregnancy and success, I had almost no symptoms other than being tired, but I also worked night shift. With this one, the nausea is back with a vengeance, and I'm tired, but I also have an 8.5 month old and am breastfeeding still.

  • My early symptoms were early spotting and cramping around implantation, then exhaustion and crazy dreams around week 5. Then my nipples felt like they'd been attacked by a grater for several weeks. My nausea and food aversions were only really bad around weeks 7-10.
