C-sections

Concern

DH and I have two wonderful kiddos already. However, I am experiencing massive baby fever and desperately want to consider having a third. With my first two I had to have C-sections. The first for high blood pressure due to stress. The second because I failed to progress after my water had broken and I labored with Pitocin for 15hrs. So I obviously feel that I will be forced into a third C-section. I am just concerned to have surgery again. First I am scared to death of needles and I hate having one put into my back. Second I just don't want anything to go wrong. The facility I would be birthing at is set up for emergency deliveries and NICU situations so I feel like the baby would be okay. I guess I am just nervous about the idea I guess.

Basically, I was just wondering if anyone had gone through a similar experience of fear and/or have had multiple successful C-sections. I totally realize that everyone is different I just want some feed back, even open to horror stories to have an all around pool of info. Thanks.

Re: Concern

  • You should check out the VBAC board.

I had a c-section with my first.  The hospital where I live has a total VBAC ban so I found another hospital and care provider for my next one.
  • I was told that after my second c-section I would never be able to have a vbac.

  • I have 2 friends who both had 3 c-sections just fine. Did they say anything about your scar tissue or uterine thinness after your second c section? Usually doctors will mention whether a third should be fine after they sew you up the second time...
  • I'm on my 3rd csection and my dr said I can do lots more if I want- we are planning on hopefully having 4 kids (aka 4 csections) total. I am fine with it- I know what to expect and I had a fine recovery with both so far. Routine csection does allow for easier recovery.
  • After DD he just said to wait at least 18months and that we should be good. Also, the doctor was all for me trying to have a VBAC with the second pregnancy so I feel like he'd be supportive if I wanted to try. Like I said the hospital is set up to handle VBACs so I could cross my fingers on that. After my first, with a different doctor, they limited me to five max C-sections, which was understandable and I completely realize that a third is not like a fifth. I think maybe it's just nerves getting to me. I've never been a fan of surgeries.

    Thanks for the advice ladies.

I had three and during my third my dr said I am good for a fourth. My dr. says she lets patients know if she feels they should not have another and she always recommends waiting a year to get pregnant again.
  • I just had my third, surgically, this was the easiest recovery. Not necessarily my fastest though. I'm still on lift/activity restriction until 12 wks this time b/c I've had some pain from over exertion and Ob wants to be sure it's not incision related (I'm 99% sure it's not... I need a Chiro!). My best advice is to send your older two to grandmas for the first week. Totally out of the house. We did that this time so I could just rest and it made a big difference in my overall healing.

I like the idea of sending the older two on a mini-vacation. They love going to grandmas' anyway.

  • Talk to your doc about having a possible VBA2C.  If/when I get pg again I'm switching providers to one that's open to VBA2C.  Search for your local ICAN group on Facebook to find supportive doctors/hospitals.

  • I had a fear of needles too, until I had a baby- all the blood work, c-section, and having blood work done every 6 hours on mag sulfate helped me get over it.

You've been through 2. You can rock 3!

Do you have a spinal or epidural? Change facilities where you give birth to ease your mind.

If you want another baby- don't let those things stop you. Good luck mama!
