Dangit! We outgrew the gPants :-(

We use almost all gDiapers for DD (i know, that makes us weird on this board).
We loved the size small when we switched her over at 6 weeks and just continued on to the Medium size.

Well, DD (almost 2) has been busting out of them lately and I finally went online and checked the sizing charts. She's on the very upper edge of what the Medium size lists, and a couple lbs over the minimum weight for size large. But she's in the early stages of potty training and I really don't want to invest in another set of covers (our current liners and inserts are good for the large covers).

So now I'm bummed that they didn't last us the whole way through to PT like I thought they would. :-(

DH actually suggested selling the gPants and buying some OS (BG 4.0 or grovia hybrids) to use with DD2 (due in 3 weeks).

Think it's worth it to switch diaper styles this late in the game for DD1 knowing that DD2 is our last kid?

Yes. But I'm biased. Maybe try a couple pockets to see if you like them as much as gdiapers first.

We have a couple BG 4.0s that we double up and use for DD1 at night. We like the h&l closure (snaps are a pain). Have two more on the way that I got on sale.

And we have one grovia hybrid that I like for her as well. I have two more of those on the way, too. :-)

I agree with Rrrrrachel. Try a couple out and see what you think.

I've never used G diapers, but if I remember right they are sort of like an AI2 where you switch out the absorbent part and reuse the cover if it's still clean. If that's the case you may really like prefolds or flats pad folded and laid in a cover. It's basically the same idea as G diapers, but way less expensive. Prefolds/flats are around $2-3 a piece depending size and brand (you'd want large flats and/or medium/baby sized prefolds) and good OS covers run $12-17. At close to PL'ing you'd probably need 2-3 covers each day and around 7-9 prefolds/flats per day.

@CLLDLL‌ - can the OS covers be reused if it's just a wet diaper? I know grovia says theirs can, but wasn't sure about other brands.

I figure we can keep the gCloth inserts to use with whatever covers or pockets we get.

I say yes, because my sister uses gdiapers and has had 3 of the gpants fall apart and need to be replaced in 8 months. Are you sure that they will last through a second kid?

Yes anything with exposed PUL can be reused. My favorites are Blueberry Coveralls and Sweet Pea OS.

Can you use prefolds or flats in the gpant covers?  I have no idea.  I've never even seen them.  But this would be even cheaper than buying new covers.

Are there any OS covers that have hook& loop closure? DH hates snaps so would be unhappy if I didn't get h&l.

It looks like all the sweet pea and blueberry OS covers are snaps :-\

I've heard newborn size prefolds tri-folded will fit, but it can cause leaking/fit issues because they are a bit bulkier than the g-cloth inserts (which were designed for them). But those g-cloth inserts are pricey!

ETA: Flats would work well though, they are pretty slim when pad folded.

It's the covers that she has grown out of, not the cloth inserts. So we need new covers either way.

And yes, I have used a newborn prefold in her gPant before when I was in a bind. They work just fine. The gCloth inserts are actually less bulky than their disposable/biodegradable inserts, so the tri-folded prefold fit just fine in the plastic liner and we didn't have any leaking issues.

Nicki's/Imagine, Thirsties, RAR, Grovia all have H&L closures.  I'm not sure how they all hold up though.  The old Thirsties aplix sucks so if you go that route make sure it's the new aplix.

I'd just invest in a stash of OS covers if that's kind of what you like.

Best bottoms, thirsties, Flips, blueberry coveralls, Imagine etc.

One of my husband's co-workers is really into G-Diapers and offered to lend us a few to try out. They mainly use the disposable inserts, so I didn't want to invest in the g-cloth ones just to try something out in loner-covers. I have lots of NB prefolds though

Anyone have Nicki's OS covers? Or Imagine OS diapers?  They are on sale and can be wiped down easily.

I really like the Grovia Hybrid shells (and they're on sale for $14) but they are harder to wipe clean if you don't use one of their waterproof-backed inserts.

I haven't tried Imagine covers but I have tried their pockets. The aplix was not very good.

I'm not sure about Nicki's.

If it were me I'd stay away from Grovia if you have a taller LO. My guy is 34" or so and he is on the largest rise setting at 19 months withou much growing room. I also agree that you won't always be able to reuse the cover with a pee diaper.

What about Thirsties Duo size 2 with the new aplix? I think those are around $12.

Thanks everyone! DD1 was 8lbs at birth and is in the 25th percentile. She'll be 2 in June and is about 28lbs.  Expecting DD2 to be similar sized, so not too worried about either of them outgrowing the Grovia OS.

I think we'll pick up some Rumparooz OS covers since the price is right.And maybe some more prefolds or flats.

So question #3 - What size prefolds or flats do I get? I'd probably just tri-fold them to use as inserts for the different covers. We have some newborn indian prefolds (maybe 12?) and some hand-me-downs as well.  Obviously, if I can get away with one or two sizes, that'd be best.

Just picked up a dozen Infant sized Indian Cotton prefolds from Nicki's with my order. they were on sale.   I figure we've got time to see if they work out and if we need another size, so I can always order different sizes later if our current inserts and a few new prefolds don't do the trick.

New stash of covers is on its way! :-D

I know I'm late to the game here, but I love using g-inserts in regular covers. I found the g-pants leak, but the inserts were good. I liked thirsties size 1 and blueberry minis with the large inserts. The size 2 and regular coveralls are a bit loose for just 1 insert alone. Now if I am using the g-inserts I prefer kawaii or any trimmer cover so there is less chance of bunching. My LO is 9 months and 15lbs so the movement might just be because he is tiny. I have also put 2 inserts in for extra absorbance and it is still super trim.
