AW: M21 results back.....

in Pregnant after a Loss
All results were negative for detection of trisomies.  We're having another boy!  I feel so relieved.  I had this almost 2 weeks ago and when I hadn't heard, called my OBs office on Monday and was told they had the results and would call me. No call Monday and no call yesterday until after hours.  I had convinced myself there was something wrong (I hate my pg brain) and worked myself into a frenzy so it was such a relief to get the all clear!

    kaylam714  - I'm AMA so that's why my insurance covers it (although I've had a loss as well). They can do it at 10 weeks  and as late as the day the baby is born. I had it done at 10 weeks exactly, my doctor said sometimes the sample at 10 weeks isn't sufficient, but she didn't want me to have to come back so I had the blood draw at 10 weeks and she said the worst that could happen is I would have to repeat in 1 week if they couldn't get the sample, but obviously it was fine.  I had Materniti21 Plus (there are others). It tests for T21, T13, T18 and a few other things like sex-related chromosomal issues.  M21 provides "Y chromosome detected" (boy) or "Y chromosome not detected" (girl). While the other brands available look for this to (in order to analyze sex-specific chromosomal disorders like Turner's, I've read that they don't all provide the sex result (or at least didn't when the first came-out). So for mine, it was part of the test.  It takes about 8 to 10 business days.  My docs office called and said the test was all negative and asked if I wanted the sex - so I figured "why not!"  It's 99.4% accurate for detection of chromosomal disorders. 

    I have read a few stories where the sex can be incorrect - although there is a high degree of accuracy.  Apparently the earlier you have it, the greater the possibility that a present Y chromosome may not be detected. I've read that there is more of a chance they tell you girl, but it turns out to be a boy in terms of error (as women don't have Y chromosomes). I've read a case or two where it went the opposite - people told boy but it was a girl, which apparently can happen with disappearing twins or m/c with a subsequent pregnancy in close time frame to the loss, but that's rare.
