Cloth Diapering

FTM building a stash

Hi. I'm due in July with our first child and am trying to build my cloth stash. I have lurked here for a while but this is my first time posting on this board. I hope you experienced cloth diapering mamas can help me fill the voids of my newborn and OS stash.

Here is what I have so far. What else do I need? I know I need more newborn changes and I think I would prefer to go the prefold and cover route. Should I buy more orange edge prefolds or should I get some yellow edge? I have no idea how big this babe will be.

Newborn:
12 GMD orange edge prefolds
5 GMD orange edge snapless workhorses
6 NB AIOs
5 NB pockets with inserts
3 Thirsties size small covers
3 Thirsties duo size 1 covers
2 snappies

OS:
9 pocket diapers
20 charcoal bamboo inserts
- Planning on ordering 15 more OS pocket diapers this week

I also have two Planetwise pail liners and 2 Planetwise wet bags.

I would like to try some kind of cloth wipe. What are your favorites?

Thanks!

  • I should add that DH requested the AIOs/pockets for the newborn stage because he is unsure about prefolds and covers.

  • I would stick with orange personally. I like my homemade cloth wipes that are single layer flannel from receiving blankets.
Make sure to have some CD safe diaper cream on hand. Other than that looks good for nb.

  • Thanks, Can you recommend a CD safe cream?

  • Also, do I have to do anything to prep the diapers I have bought used other than running them through a hot wash? The ones I bought used are prefolds, workhorses and Thirsties covers.

And how should I prep my new pockets, AIOs and charcoal bamboo inserts?

  • A 1/4 cup bleach in the wash is a good idea for used items.
New things that are not natural fibers only need to be washed once, natural fibers 3-5 times.

CJs is a good cream to have on hand and is relatively inexpensive, but you can also use coconut oil on its own if you like that idea.

Honestly I learned most of my stuff by searching in past posts. There's a search option so I'd put in stuff like prepping used diapers or wash routine. I love that feature. The other day I just put in the type of diaper I was interested in and lots of old threads pop up with tons of info! Super helpful but I'm sure someone will reply to you in here too.

For used diapers you need to add a 1/4 c of bleach to your wash and rinse rinse rinse til there is no bleach smell to properly sanitize them.

For your new diapers depend on manufacturer...check the brand and it's recommendations via google but tupicslly if it's synthetic ex: microfibre, pul cover wash once and your good, if it's natiral you need to wash and dry anywhere between 3-5 times to get rid of oils and get absorbancy too. Your new prefolds should puff up and shrink quite a bit...
