CARES Harnesses

Are they worth it? We are planning an international trip with my DH, and our three DS's (4, 3, and 2) at the time of travel, and we really don't want to lug our car seats through the airports. Anyone ever used them before? Pros and Cons? Thanks in advance for any advice or input! -A

Re: CARES Harnesses

  • Are you going to need car seats at your destination?  If so, then I would bring your car seats and use them on the plane.  I know lugging them through the airport doesn't sound like fun but I'd rather do that and have the kids be safe and comfortable on the flight, especially for a longer flight.  You can get basic luggage carts at Walmart for cheap to carry the seats which makes it pretty easy actually. The CARES harness doesn't fit most kids properly until they are around 40 lbs and its outgrown at 44 lbs so it's a waste for most people.

  • Ditto the PPs.  I have one (got extremely lucky and found it on a swap site for $15) but it was so big when I tried to use it for DS1 (at 2.5) that he could easily slip out.  I also had no clue about how dangerous it was to not have him properly restrained on the plane.

I would plan to take your seats (at least for the 2 and 3 year old and I would consider a booster for the 4 year old depending on the child/maturity) and either strap them to your carry ons or get a luggage cart to wheel them through the airport.

  • We bought the Britax cart to lug DD's convertible carseat through the airport.  It is pricey but made traveling with that bulky item so much easier.  We either put DD in the seat and pulled her through the airport or we load it up with bags and carry ons to make lugging all our stuff that much easier.

  • Your 2 and 3 year old will need car seats for on the plane ride and if you need car seats are your destination I would bring the 4 year olds as well.
