Cloth Diapering

New to this Board

Hey all! I'm pretty active over in March14, but this is my first time on here. My LO is just over 4 weeks old, born on March 23. We've been using disposable diapers gifted at our shower at first, but I bought cloth diapers with the intention of using them after LO's bathroom frequency slowed down. When would be a good time to start?

There's probably been a post similar to this before, but I'm mobile bumping, so when I try to search for something it just searches the knot's forums, instead of the bump for some reason.

We bought Charlie Banana for our little boy if that makes a difference. Also out of curiosity, is the toilet water sprayer thing necessary? We don't have one, but we're trying to figure out the best/most hygienic way to rinse the poopy ones.
We're excited to start!

  • Just dive in and start! You don't really need to spray poop until your baby is on solids. The poops now will just rinse right away in the wash no problem. Do a separate rinse first before your main wash cycle.

  • I would start now BECAUSE of the frequency of diaper changes. It is SO great to have cloth in those early days when baby dirties a diaper immediately after or during a diaper change.

I assume that you have the OS Charlie Bananas? They might not fit yet, but before I got rid of all mine, I am pretty sure that they fit quite early for a OS, so they probably could fit, depending on the size of your baby.

My son is almost 10 months, and we have never used a sprayer. When we started solids we had a couple months of peanut butter poop that we either used a spatula to scrape, a peri bottle to spray, or just dunked and swished. Ever since we have had easily plopable diapers.
We were lucky that the PB stage was short though, if it had lasted longer I may have though about a sprayer.

My LO did not get the memo that EBF babies can go up a few days without pooping, nearly every diaper change includes poop.

I would just jump in. We just started cloth diapering about a month ago, but that was because we didn't plan on CD originally and decided at that point to give it a try.

  • FYI, your CB's might not fit your 4 week old yet.  Depends on baby's size and how chunky their legs are.  You could try it though.  I've never used CB's but my average sized baby started fitting my OS stash at about 5 weeks.

  • Thanks for all the info everyone! I pump and supplement with formula (jaundice baby) so his poop is a little thicker than a EBF baby, but he's only pooping twice a day. I do have OS diapers, so I'll start as soon as they for him, which shouldn't be too long bc he's a chunker weighing over 10 lbs already!
  • Even formula poo doesn't need to be sprayed. And most os fit at 10 lbs. So I'd say you are good to go. Get some fluff on that bum! And flaunt a pic on Friday!!
