Re: Breastfeeding Check-In
1.) Basics: How old is LO, and are you EBF/EP/combo/whatever? 3w1d, EBF
2.) How are you doing just in general? Feeling OK? Able to enjoy life? I think I'm doing pretty well. I'm enjoying being home (I thought I'd be chomping at the bit to get back to the office), and really loving on every minute I get to spend with my baby girl.
3.) How is breastfeeding going? Challenges, victories, concerns? I feel like we really have the EBF thing down. I have a comedy show I'm going to on Friday with a couple of friends and I have to pump for the first time and introduce Cooper to a bottle. I'm really worried about how she will take to it and whether or not we'll have any nipple confusion issues.
4.) Give advice and/or kudos to one of the PPs on one of their challenges, victories, or concerns. I love seeing all the moms working through so many different forms of breastfeeding. It continues to make me feel like there is nothing I can't do because there are so many variations.
5.) Free space! What else do you want to talk about? I really wish I weren't so lazy since I've been home. We are feeding on demand and haven't even considered any kind of schedule and therefore I am still napping when she naps (a lot) and haven't done housework beyond washing baby clothes and diapers. How does everyone get motivated?
Almost 9 weeks! How is that even possible?! He is EBF and gets a pumped bottle about once a week.
Feeling really good! I feel like we are definitely adjusted now. 2 kids isn't so bad after all
We have hit our stride now. Still dealing with an overactive letdown but it's getting more and more manageable. He's almost 20lbs so we know everything's in working order.
@akflutterby we introduced the bottle at 4 weeks with both kids and haven't had any issues!
DS smiled while nursing this week... I think my heart literally melted into a puddle on the floor.
1.) Basics: How old is LO, and are you EBF/EP/combo/whatever?
Brooklyn is 8 weeks old today, and EBF/occasional bottle of pumped milk.
2.) How are you doing just in general? Feeling OK? Able to enjoy life?
Emotionally I'm in a MUCH better place. I'm slowly weaning myself off the anti-anxiety meds I was prescribed at her birth. LO is experiencing some reflux/colic issues in the evening that are currently stressing me out a little, but DH and I are handling it as best we can. I know she will grow out of this soon, but her cries break my heart.
3.) How is breastfeeding going? Challenges, victories, concerns?
BFing itself is going great, we are totally off the shield and her latch is almost perfect. She's gaining weight like a champ (she's almost 12 pounds!) and I'm still able to pump nd build my freezer stash. The only really frustrating thing is that she constantly wants to comfort nurse, and refuses a pacifier. I've tried every brand I can find and the only pacifier she wants is ME. Any suggestions on what to do about this (or how long this phase will last) would be appreciated!
4.) Give advice and/or kudos to one of the PPs on one of their challenges, victories, or concerns.
@akflutterby good luck with the bottle! If it makes you feel better LO gets a bottle or two a week at times when I know we will be out for a feeding, and we've had no nipple confusion whatsoever!
5.) Free space! What else do you want to talk about?
Does anyone else's LO refuse to take a bottle from you? She'll take one just fine from DH or other family but she fights and just let's it dribble all over herself when I try.
2.) How are you doing just in general? Feeling OK? Able to enjoy life? I am pretty content. I have gotten out more recently and that's been nice! Visited work and really miss my coworkers but I'm not ready to go back yet!
3.) How is breastfeeding going? Challenges, victories, concerns? I think we are doing pretty good overall. Last week I got mastitis and had 104 temp. but once diagnosed and given antibiotics, I was much better. I breastfeed LO the whole time but I was pretty miserable!
4.) Give advice and/or kudos to one of the PPs on one of their challenges, victories, or concerns. I love seeing/reading all the other women dealing with issues that I am. We are from a really small town so we don't have mommy groups or breastfeeding groups, so to see it here really helps my confidence in knowing breastfeeding is working and I'm not going crazy!
5.) Free space! What else do you want to talk about? I really wish I knew more about pumping and when/how you do it without taking away milk from your baby. I feel like she uses all my milk and I'm worried about having some built up for going back to work or small trips away from her.
The key for me really was just "giving in" to breastfeeding. Accepting that I have no control over it. I can't schedule it, I can't reason with a newborn... I just have to trust both our bodies-- mine to provide for her and hers to thrive. And she is! Even though sometimes she cries and I just have to survive that... she's thriving!
3weeks and 3 days. We're a combo of nursing & pumping.
2.) How are you doing just in general? Feeling OK? Able to enjoy life?
Starting to feel much better. I think I've had a bit of the blues. I'm keeping watch and told DH how I've been feeling so he can watch out too. Just in case. I think I'm finally enjoying daily life.
3.) How is breastfeeding going? Challenges, victories, concerns?
It's been a struggle so far. Just the exhaustion of it has been getting to me. Trying to get a pumping schedule started is super frustrating because if I pump right after a feeding, and LO gets hungry before i had time to rebuild milk she's still hungry after I feed her. Then I feel like I need to feed her what I just pumped..and can never get ahead. Anyone have any suggestions?
4.) Give advice and/or kudos to one of the PPs on one of their challenges, victories, or concerns.
I give you all kudos for Breastfeeding at all!! This isn't easy!!!
5.) Free space! What else do you want to talk about? This is my first Breastfeeding checkin!!!!
BF'ing is going well - definitely easier and more enjoyable than those early weeks . I am still using the nipple shield which is a PITA. I am getting tired of putting it on, having it slip around, flip up etc. But when I've tried nursing without it, he's still clamping due to so much milk and gasping and gulping the whole time. My nipples were sore again for days after nursing without it once, so I'm going to wait a bit longer I guess. Victories - yesterday my right breast was really fully when I woke up so I decided to just pump that one and got 7 oz from just that one breast! Normally I pump about 6 from both. On Easter, I was anxious about BF'ing in front of my IL's who aren't super supportive - mainly about getting the nipple shield on and keeping it on without being totally exposed, but it went okay.
2.) How are you doing just in general? Feeling OK? Able to enjoy life? We are doing great for the most part. Yesterday was difficult as LO was very fussy. I too have bad days mourning my previous childless life, but those days are getting fewer and fewer.
3.) How is breastfeeding going? Challenges, victories, concerns? The breastfeeding is going great. It's when I introduce a bottle where I'm having concerns. LO downs a bottle, no matter how many onces are in it in less then 2 minutes. It could be 3oz. or up to 5 oz. Then she is still hungry! I'm really nervous when I leave her with my grandmother for the days going back to work that she is going to down all the bottles and then still be hungry! Is anyone else having this issue?
4.) Give advice and/or kudos to one of the PPs on one of their challenges, victories, or concerns. I'm so impressed by all the mommas out there who have faced breastfeeding challanges like having to use nipple shields, pumping and supplementing, low supply. I've been extremely lucky, but you ladies are an inspiration! I don't know if I could have done that without giving up.
5.) Free space! What else do you want to talk about?
Ava will be 9 weeks tomorrow and we EBF with an occasional bottle.
2.) How are you doing just in general? Feeling OK? Able to enjoy life?
I'm good, we've been home this week because baby girl got her 2 month shots yesterday and has been understandably fussy/clingy. We get out and go when we want/need to.
3.) How is breastfeeding going? Challenges, victories, concerns?
It's going well. I just had a mom fail though. She way overate and then vomited everywhere. Wardrobe change and shower for me, I managed to make sure none got on her. DH has her right now and I'm bumping instead of sleeping.
4.) Give advice and/or kudos to one of the PPs on one of their challenges, victories, or concerns.
@Sanibel21, we have a pack and play with a newborn bassinet attachment on it for baby to nap in downstairs during the day. That or a Rock n Play would be my suggestion.
@AriaAmante143, Ava refuses bottles from me too. She actually cracks me up because she gives me this look like I've lost my mind if I try to give her a bottle!
5.) Free space! What else do you want to talk about?
With my pedi's blessing I've started adding dairy back into my diet the past few days now that the reflux is under control. I'm not going nuts with it, just not being hyper vigilant about it. She doesn't seem to be reacting so I think we are in the clear!
5 weeks 5 days, ebf
2.) How are you doing just in general? Feeling OK? Able to enjoy life?
I feel great. I have been enjoying growing out with friends for lunch occasionally and we go to a bible study every Thursday night. Thankfully it's become a schedule and something I can look forward to.
3.) How is breastfeeding going? Challenges, victories, concerns?
I EBF and feed on demand. He has pretty much been on his own same schedule since birth. Eating every 2-3 hours during the day and 2.5-4 at night. My problem is that he only wants to be held during the day, and I'm having a hard time getting a pumping session in to build up my freezer stash for when I go back to work. My DH gets home at 530pm every day and he takes DS to spend time with him while I make supper. By the time supper is made and eaten, he wants to eat again. Any guidance on fitting in pumping sessions with a snuggly LO?
Also, he has had maybe 5 bottles in his life and this past weekend I had 20ml extra after pumping so I was going to feed him it. He would not take it at all, and wouldn't even latch. He just cried and cried. The other times he has taken the bottle just fine. Any guidance on that?

I'll post my reply when I read them all.

Our English Bulldog, Ulga born 4/9/2013
Baby Boy Xander born 3/13/2014
3.5 weeks- a little bit of everything, trying to get back to EBF
2.) How are you doing just in general? Feeling OK? Able to enjoy life?
Loving being a mom, but breastfeeding is difficult. I try to get out of the house as much as possible. The in-laws left today, so that's a relief.
3.) How is breastfeeding going? Challenges, victories, concerns?
Right now it is very hard. My routine is to breastfeed for about an hour until I can't take the pain, then I pump what I can and give that to her, and sometimes I have to supplement with formula afterwards, only to repeat a few hours later. I have ordered a nipple shield, and I hope that helps with the pain. If that doesn't work, my plan is to exclusively pump. It is so hard, but I'm not ready to give up! Just taking it day by day!
4.) Give advice and/or kudos to one of the PPs on one of their challenges, victories, or concerns
@pepperedmoth I really appreciate your positivity! Hearing about people's success makes it easier to keep trying.
@Andreabills same thing happened to me today. She was fussy, and I thought she was still hungry, so I fed her again, and she spit up all over me!
5.) Free space! What else do you want to talk about?
Now that in laws are gone, and my nipple shield is coming in tomorrow, I am looking to get a fresh start with breastfeeding. I plan on doing skin to skin all day, and feeding on demand, and pumping afterwards. Any advice on how to wean off supplementing with formula would be much appreciated!
~3 weeks. Ebf right now but will be pumping and introducing bottle soon in prep for back to work
2.) How are you doing just in general? Feeling OK? Able to enjoy life?
~feeling good for the most part. I'm a single mom so it's a little hard with just is two here at home.
3.) How is breastfeeding going? Challenges, victories, concerns?
~bf going good so far. My lo was 4 lbs 13 oz when she left the hospital. Last week she was 6 lbs even. So I'm guessing she's getting enough milk (that was my main concern originally). Also the nipple soreness almost made me quit and yesterday my left nipple was sore but it's better today.
4.) Give advice and/or kudos to one of the PPs on one of their challenges, victories, or concerns.
~I would love to be able to bf while shopping in walmart too!!!!! That's some skills!
5.) Free space! What else do you want to talk about?
~I'm sad. My good friend died today and she never got to meet the baby. She was my voice of reason when I found out I was pregnant and didn't know what to do. (Tears).
How big was your baby when she was born? Ava was 3-9 and was 5 weeks early. Her size definitely affected her ability to feed and we didn't start EBF until she was nearly 6 weeks old and roughly 5 pounds. Until then I pumped and she bottle fed.
10 week old twins, primarily BF but some formula supplement a few days a week.
2.) How are you doing just in general? Feeling OK? Able to enjoy life?
I'm doing ok. I'm able to get out of the house with all three kids most days so that helps a lot. I tend to be the type of person who needs alone time which has been hard to come by. Keira will rarely take a bottle and has a really gassy period at night where she really only wants mama so even though DH is willing to try taking on all the kids I feel bad leaving him like that.
3.) How is breastfeeding going? Challenges, victories, concerns?
I've been starting to have pain in both breasts and bright pink/red nipples with a little cracking. The doctor prescribed me APNO so we'll see if that helps. Unfortunately I think my supply has been affected a little bit but I'm trying to keep up with fenugreek, oatmeal, and tea to try getting it back up. The other challenge I have is trying to manage both appetites when out in public. Unless I'm in the car I can't really tandem feed them at this point. If they are both hungry I'm just doing my best to feed one and hold the other off with a pacifier. I've also been packing bottles and formula that could be mixed if needed. I think I could BF one and bottle feed the other in their car seat.
4.) Give advice and/or kudos to one of the PPs on one of their challenges, victories, or concerns.
@FarmBoysWife kudos on your freezer stash. I'm very jealous
