Cloth Diapering

Overnight solutions? And a little AW.

So, I told my self two months ago when I ran our of already purchased disposables I would start using cloth at night. Well I an about three days away from going full time cloth. Here is my problem, I don't know what to use. I think that something I already have will probably work, but I just don't know what combination to try. Just to let you know my LO just started sleeping thru the night; for her that means from about 8:00pm - 7:30am. (Yeah!!!! Mommy gets to eat dinner and get a good nights sleep!!!) Her size two pampers swaddlers are just barely keeping up, in the morning the are about to POP. This kid really pees at night. So this is what I have to work with. Flip covers , Sunbaby pockets, Bg pocket, Bg microfiber inserts, Flip stay-dry liners, Thirsty hemp liners, Sunbaby bamboo/microfiber inserts, Ans a super thin thing that I got second hand that will hold about 1.5 oz, So what combination do you think I should try?

  • If she's a super pee-er I think I'd stay away from MF at night. When MF gets really saturated it's prone to compression leaks when baby lays on it.

Do you have any prefolds or flats?  I would maybe try a prefold/flat with a thirsty hemp doulber in the Flip cover. If you don't have any prefolds or flats, maybe start with the Sunbaby bamboo/MF and the hemp doubler.  If you get leaks, you can always order some prefolds or bamboo inserts.

  • Sorry for the double post, my computer won't let me edit my comment above.

Wanted to add that I'm not familiar with the Sunbaby bamboo/MF inserts.  If they are a blend rather than having one side that's bamboo and one that's MF, you don't want the MF touching baby.  So that's not a good option in the Flip, you'd need to use a pocket to stuff it in.

  • I do have some of those cheap gerber prefold that you get at walmart. I have only ever used them for burp rags, would that work?

  • If she's a super pee-er, you are really going to want to look into fitteds.  You can fit a fitted in a flip cover.  Maybe try the bg pocket with the hemp and the bamboo/mf double stuffed?

  • The Gerber prefolds are not absorbent. They would work with the hemp/microfiber insert in the flip to keep the microfiber from LOs skin as @CLLDLL‌ mentioned above.

  • My 5 month old son pees through size 3 disposables at night. And he's no where near that weight limit.

We've gone to fitteds for overnight. A prefold with a hemp insert was not working for us. I now use Little Tush Twinkie Tushes on him.

  • You are going to want as much natural fiber as possible, I would start by trying to see how many inserts you can get in a pocket or the flip cover with out causing gaps. Maybe 2 hemp with a MF on top in the pocket if it fits? Or two hemp with a staydry in the flip?

You are probably going to have issues with what you have, as inserts only cover front and back, with no side/ hip coverage. A fitted, or at least a prefold would work better. We had success with 3 inserts in a pocket for about 4 months (4-8 months) before that just didnt cut it. Now we use a great prefold with a hemp doubler.

  • Thanks for all the input! I think tonight I will try one of the blended insets with a hemp stuffed in a pocket. I also think since it's earth day and I can probably find a good deal , I'll go ahead and order some good pre-folds and maybe a fitted! Yeah new fluff.

  • Are bumkins fitted any good? OsoCozy unbleached Indian cotton prefolds?

  • The thin thing may be zorb? We always liked fitteds at night. I kind of hate you for how well she sleeps.

  • @Rrrrrachel‌ I kind of hate to tell people how well she sleeps. She has only woke up once a night since about three months! I honestly fell if I tell too many people I will jinx it! She is SUPER easy. The insert came with a "Dora" (brand not explorer) diaper it was written in Chinese. I paid 5 bucks for 2diapers and 4inserts. I kept the inserts the diapers were delamanted.

  • Yeah. Don't tell anyone. J STTN at like a month and now it's common for him to wake once or twice before I even get to bed, and he wakes at 6. And sometimes 4. He used to sleep like 13 hours. I was all "my baby STTN, take that you Bishes!" and it backfired.

Yup... DS STTN at 6 weeks. Then at 9.5mo he learned how to walk, crawl, and stand in his crib. Then there were his molars, maybe a regression. Who knows. He's cutting another molar right now, but i gave him Tylenol last night, and he STTN. But woke at 5am. I miss sleep.

We use a red edge GMD, with either a large Thirstieshemp insert, or two smalls. He's a tummy sleeper, so I'm a little paranoid with making sure there's enough absorbancey up front.
  • I know it will probably be short lived, I suspect teething will kill her sleep.but for now, I shall not complain.

  • What is this sleeping through the night that you speak of?
    Baby Birthday Ticker Tickerimage

  • Yeah. Seriously. It's been an entire year of a wakeful period. The longest this baby has ever slept is five straight hours. Ever. And it was only twice. Shouldn't he also be exhausted?

  • I'm sorry, but if it makes you feel better last night she kept waking me up sleep crying. She was still asleep and crying. Full tears and all. I had to pat her butt till she stopped. She find this three times. Though I guess she still technically sttn.
