Fertility Doctors

I just had my 3rd miscarriage in a row this year and am looking for a reproductive endocrinologist in the Pittsburgh area.  I live in the North Hills but am willing to travel to the city.  Has anyone had any experience with this or have any recommendations?  I already have one child, so it would be great if there was someone who specialized in secondary infertility.  Thanks :)

I highly recommend the Center of Fertility and Reproductive Endocrinology at Magee. My husband and I went through several unsuccessful IUI's with another doctor before going to Magee, and within a few months we were pregnant after just one attempt with IVF. We saw Dr. Wakim and loved him, but all of the doctors, nurses and staff there are wonderful. I'm not sure if any of the doctors specialize in secondary infertility, but it's worth calling to ask. Good luck!
  • I also go to the Center for Fertility and R/E at Magee but I go to their office in Hermitage.  I see Dr. Collins, and although I have just started the process with them, everyone their is amazing, helpful, and much different than the infertility process with your ob/gyn.  Good luck!

I'm so glad you asked this question @JRowe013, I was just about to post something similar.

Does anyone know if there is a good RE not at Magee (insurance reasons...*sigh)?
I know of a few people who've had success and liked the Reproductive Health Specialists, but I don't know much about them.

  • West Penn hospital has The Jones Institute. I used to go there before their other doctor left. Their staff is wonderful and I hear that the new doctor is having good success.

  • I've had friends who have been successful at all 3. I started at RHS about 3 yrs ago then switched to Magee since they were doing "shared DE" cycles. Never had a problem with RHS for short time I was there. Good luck!!

Met with RE 4/11. 2 IUI's BFN. DE best option. Switched clinics to do "shared" program. Had to retake all tests and a mamm that put me behind and then on a DE waiting list for 12 months. Picked a donor!! (10/13/13) Got matched. Estimated transfer in December. After 2.5 years of patiently waiting I will finally cycle....can hardly believe it. DE cycle got cancelled. One of her tests came back positive.  Waiting for another donor. Donor picked!! (1/18/14)

  • I used Dr. Paul Tippet in Wexford, PA. He was great. His wife is the nurse and they are very laid back and make you feel very comfortable. I also didn't have insurance to cover some meds and they were able to get me samples. I am currently 9 months pregnant b/c of them and plan on continuing to use him after I give birth. He does not deliver though. He takes most insurances.
  • I went to RHS. If we try for a second (assuming that all goes well, I am 24w2d right now) I will likely go to Magee. You might want to check and see if your insurance is going to cover any of the recurrent miscarriage testing or infertility testing/procedures/meds. Most insurance does not cover infertility, so it would not matter if your RE is in network or not.

I picked RHS based on the numbers, but in the end we felt like a number to them. I am happy to explain the whole story to you, just PM me. At first I was really confident there. In the end, we became pregnant on our own - the positive was 1 week after they told me I would have to do IFV to ever get pregnant and stay pregnant (I had 3 m/c). I had to do a lot of my own research and ask/insist for certain tests once I got the bfp - I never felt that they were concerned with my recurrent loss. Please PM me because there is a lot to what happened that would leave me concerned if I was picking out an RE.

  • I have been with RHS for about 3 years.  (Dr. Erb specifically, who we love) We did 3 rounds of injectables with intercourse, 3 IUIs and just completed our first round of IVF. (Transfer was Saturday).  I like that they know where I work so they cater my appointments to my teaching schedule as much as possible.  I also like that I know everyone by name, and they know me.  I have worked with Dr Albert, when Dr. Erb was not on rotation, and I have to say Dr. Erb is much more personable and friendly.  RHS also had some very reasonable cost sharing plans.  We spent $26,000 for 3 rounds, which included transferring any frozen embryos and ICSI.

  • Thanks for all of the information!  I just set up an appointment with Dr. Wakim at Magee. You ladies are wonderful :)

  • I had a great experience at RHS with Dr. Kubik.  I didn't care for Dr. Erb, but that was just differences in personality.  I really liked how they talked about the science and what studies show what.  They also were very available to answer questions which was key.  I also found that even though my insurance didn't have a fertility rider, their charges were fairly affordable at $300 per IUI which is lower than some of my friends experiences, but of course it depends on what all you are doing with the IUI.
Excited for our new little one!  Two Angels remain in our prayers.
