I've never done a poll, so hopefully it works out.

A lot of doctors say that teething is not associated with fever. Please let me know your experience. My baby:

Re: Teething + Fevers

  • Wyatt has no teeth yet, but has had a 99.5 - 100.2 temp the last 2 days. No other symptoms, but I swear he is teething. The nurse at the doctors office said that the doctor would say teething doesn't cause it, but in her personal experience, it does.

So confusing and I know every kid is different.

  • Hunter has 2 teeth now and the way I was pretty sure he was cutting them was due to a low grade fever (100) and sure enough a couple days later the first one popped through and then 3 days later the next one. It's been kind of a hellish week and a half!

  • Jackson also had a low grade fever when teething. He'd be ~99 for 2-3 days and then a tooth would pop through. He did also get 2 within about 24 hours, so that could make a difference too.

  • Maybe another dental person will correct me.....

From what I understand teeth are close to the sinus cavities. So it makes sense to me that when teething inflammation can occur in the sinuses and cause runny noses and low grade fevers. That's the way I always understood it. But I could be wrong.

  • Ds2 used to get fevers all.the.time! Anywhere from 100-102 with absolutely no other symptoms than kinda crabby and chewing on stuff. He didn't do it until about 1.5 yrs though, and never had higher fever prior with teething. I'm hoping DS2 doesn't do it as well!
  • DS is cutting his first tooth right now, no fever. yet.

  • Runny nose and congestion but no fever.
  • If the temperature is 100.4 or under--it is not medically considered to be a fever. It is just a normal temperature.

So, that is what doctors mean when they say that teething should never cause a fever. Anything up to 100.4 is just considered variations on normal and you shouldn't do anything to "treat" it.

That said, kids can teeth and have illnesses at the same time. So I would definitely call the pediatrician if there was a true fever for over two days, regardless if you think he is Al's teething.
  • #1 had low grade fevers with her teething at age one when she got her first tooth and a few fevers with the rest (not all).

#2 didn't have a fever with his first two teeth almost 2 months ago.
