No naps-again

So K will nap 2 x per week-what is the deal? Anyone else's child refuse to nap?! What time are you putting your kiddos down at for nap time? Annoyed.

Re: No naps-again

  • We don't nap on the weekends anymore unless he conks out in the car after a big activity. During the week, he still naps at daycare because he gets up 2 hours earlier than on the weekend so he still needs the sleep. Honestly, he's fine without a nap-- I just miss the break myself.

  • DS goes down for a nap at noon on days we're home and around 11:30 at daycare (but he's up earlier on those days and more active since he's running around with the other kids).  He only got a half hour nap yesterday because of all the Easter craziness and he was in a good mood while we were still with family, but he got pretty cranky as bedtime drew closer.  He naps for at least 2 hours, so I'm optimistic that he'll still be napping for quite a while.

What time are you putting her down?  Does she have an active morning?

  • Hudson is up for the day at 7 and is down for a nap by 12:30 and usually sleeps for 2-3 hours.

Even if she's only napping 2 days a week, keep her nap/quiet time consistent and most kids this age (notice I said most, not all) will fall back into their regular napping routine.  With DS1, he hit a few nap strikes but within a week or two of keeping his routine consistent, he was back to napping.

When he did outgrow naps (around 3 years 2 months when he stopped napping consistently for 3+ weeks), we still had an hour and a half of daily quiet time where he had to play in his room (started out on his bed) quietly.  He could look through books, play with cars or trains, or really any toy that was quiet.  Even at 6, he still has about 30 minutes of quiet time on the weekends where he has to stay in his room and read or play quietly.  I'm a big believer that everyone needs a little downtime during the day.  It took a little "training" to get into the quiet time routine but it only took a few days and the addition of a timer at first before he picked it up.
  • She gets up about 6:30 and I put her down about 12:30 (used to be 11:45/12), so I guess Ill bump it to 1:00 to see if that helps. The thing is I can tell she is clearly tired, but super wound up too-she is a very hyper girl. In the mornings we usually attend a class (music, dance, or swim) and then we usually walk around our neighborhood a few blocks (a lot for her to walk!), then general playing. I do notice she does nap after swim class so maybe we need to be more physical. Also, our sitter who comes on Fridays always gets her down-but she sings her to sleep, and well---when I do that my daughter thinks its "fun" time so just wants to play with me! Maybe I need to ask my sitter to NOT do this so K can get into trying to work out going to sleep herself.

She is a disaster most days towards the end of the day without a nap. I do let her try to fall asleep-and that ends up w her sitting in her bed for an hr to 1.5 hrs. Im hoping this is a phase but it seems to be going on longer than it should-and I just dont think she is ready (nor me!) to forgo her nap time! Hopefully pushing back the time and perhaps having her do more physical activity will help. ugh

  • DD has skipped nap a few times, but I still make her lay in her crib for 1.5-2 hrs. I've started reminding her it is time to rest and nap when I lay her down. "Ok, DD, it is nap time now. Time to rest and close your eyes. Etc" We also moved nap time to 1 from 12:30.
  • DS has been occasionally skipping naps for the past several weeks, at home and at DC. He is usually up around 7 and naps a little after noon for about 2 hrs, bedtime around 8:30. I recently had to change how I put him down for naps. I used to nurse him to sleep then lay him down in his crib. He started waking up when I laid him down and wouldn't go back to sleep. So I started just putting him straight in the crib and patting or rubbing his back until he fell asleep. I kept the nap prep routine the same (diaper, book, close curtains, snuggles) and told him what I was doing. He also thinks mama time is fun time and is high energy. So I had to be really firm with him and tell him he had to lay still if he wanted me to rub his back, otherwise I'd leave the room and come back in about 5 min. If I just left him in there he would just play and not go to sleep - he needed the help winding down. At DC sometimes they have to rub his back too, though usually he just grabs his blankie and pillow and zonks out. I think a busy  morning helps get him tired, but if I wait until he's over-tired (like pushing his nap later) he has a harder time winding down.

That was a big wall of text, sorry! I hope it helps a little. GL!

  • Maybe try moving it up a bit, rather than back?  I know that DS naps better if he goes down between 11:30 and 12 than if he naps closer to 1.  He's up between 6:30 and 7:30 most of the time (depending on if I work that day or not) and he's down for a nap by noon.  She may be getting overtired and wired and then unable to settle back down.  Just a thought.

Hope she settles back into a nap routine soon.. I really dread the day that DS gives up naps.  We'll definitely enforce some sort of quiet/rest time anyway, but I need that nap time to reset and get stuff done around the house or, frankly, take one myself!

I was going to suggest this, too.  If she gets to the point of being overtired, she'll likely fight it even harder.  It sounds like you've got a busy morning and with wearing her out on your walk, she may be ready for an earlier nap and not need extra activity to wear her out further.
  • Thanks for the suggestions-I never even thought about moving it back! Ill try this sometime this week. Fingers crossed!!

  • DD went through a month long nap strike in February. Maybe one or two naps a week, otherwise we just did quiet time in her room. Then rather suddenly she started napping again, 2-3 hours at a time and hasn't skipped for a long time. It might just be a nap strike, don't give up. :)

  • DS wakes up at 6:30am every day on his own. Nap time is at 1pm. 99% of the time he naps for 1.5hrs. We had a bit of a nap strike happen when we moved him to a regular bed, but I kept being consistent and eventually it went back to normal. Nap or no nap, he has to be in his room for "quiet time" for an hour.
