Serious but stupid question

I am 37 weeks pregnant. Yesterday I spent the entire day with my in-laws. We were out and about when all of a sudden I drop an earring. I was reaching down to get and bent over in a way that didn't hurt me or the baby. As I was about to go down my FIL and SIL about chewed me out because I was going to cause the baby to flip over and therefore out of position. I tried to tell them it that it wasn't that easy because there was hardly any room for baby to move. They looked at me like I was stupid and then went off on a long lecture. My SIL then said, "dad knows what he is talking about " I was so irritated I decided to let it go. So my question to you ladies is if that is possible?

  • My baby has been head down since before 30 weeks, and I've bent over every day at work, and still bend over. I highly doubt something as simple as bending over would cause a baby to turn.

    Just smile and nod :)
  • Thanks ladies, that's what I figured! It's just that they tell me all the time... It's getting to be annoying!

  • Ugh that's so annoying of them! I'm pretty sure that bending over has nothing to do with the baby's position. My baby is head down (thankfully) and I bend down/over pretty much everyday.
  • And that was coming from two people who have never even been pregnant!

  • Everyone thinks they know more than you. If this we're true then many of us would be fucked.

  • My Doula said that at this point (really after 36 weeks) if the baby flips out of head-down position you will FEEL it and it will hurt. The head is tucked down in your pelvis, the baby would have to pull it's head out of the pelvic bone, and then flip.

I don't even want to imagine this. My LO had the majority of her body on my right side for the longest time and she decided to pivot over more towards the left one night last week. It felt like she was clawing her way across my insides and was incredibly unpleasant.

  • If it was that easy, my NMW wouldn't have had to endure having her LO flipped at 38w. She said it hurt quite a bit and her belly was left bruised by the 3 attempts/20 minutes it took to get her LO head down.

I'd honestly start telling them to shove it. That's pretty annoying.

It’s not that I don’t like you, it’s that I don’t know you. Stranger Danger.

Didn't you know? Everyone knows more about your pregnancy than you do. It's pretty much a fact of life...
I vote smack their smug selves, but that might have negative repercussions, so take my advice with a grain of salt.
  • Just trying to imagine what it would feel like for the baby to flip this late in the game makes me want to yack.

Baby rolling from the left to the right is uncomfortable enough. But to flip! That would not be nice.
  • Well, that's a new one. I've heard a lot of OWTs, but never one about bending over. Does he also believe that reaching over your head can cause the umbilical cord to wrap around the baby's neck and that a pedicure can put you into labor?

If all it took to flip a baby was for the mom to bend over, a lot of chiropractors and breech-specialty midwives would be out of work, and c-section rates would drop dramatically.

Just smile and nod and go about your business. Some people just can't keep their mouths shut around pregnant women.

  • I'm gonna say it's an old wive's tale just like raising your arms above your head will cause the cord to wrap around the baby. It just doesn't work that way. If it did then the drs would be telling us to quit bending over after the baby is head down.

Congrats to my GP Sister from another mister Bruinsbabe!!

  • Better not be true or I've been making my baby do flips for months. I work at cosmetics counters and all day long, am bending over to get in drawers.
  • Should have told them shove it.
  • Wow you're not flipping a snow globe. Never heard that before but if it were true my baby would be doing flips all day.
  • My dad is obsessed with me "drinking enough fluids" because he's convinced that the reason my mum was induced at 42 weeks is because she didn't drink enough water. If i'm lucky, I might just pee the baby out.
