Screaming Children---HELP!

We had 2 family stops this weekend both where my girls SCREAMED non-stop for hours. They are 5 months and they have done this once before about a month ago when my husband took them to his parents and they had the whole neighborhood over there to see them. He said it was a disaster. Now this weekend, at his family's gathering and mine, they did the same thing. Once they started screaming, they were inconsolable and would not stop. Any ideas? They were not hungry and had clean diapers....we are at a loss. They do fine when we take them in public...restaurants, Target, grocery store, church, etc. and even took pictures with the Easter Bunny with no problem! Also, once we get home, they are fine! TIA!

Sounds like overstimulation. Ds would get upset at large gatherings. It helped to take him in another room on his own for a little bit.

I agree about overstimulation.  That happened a lot to us around 4-5 months.  We also would take DD outside or somewhere else to let her calm down.  Hope your next family gathering isn't so stressful!

I used to have to take DS into a separate room to calm him.

Yes, this happened to DS his first Easter when he was about 4 or 5 months old. We just sought refuge in the basement for a bit to relax him. Course DH's two Aunts followed us and we had to ask them to give us some space. They were a bit annoyed but understood.

DSs first Christmas I had to tell some relatives that if they didnt give me a chance to get him calm enough to be fed and napped...that they were welcome to come by at 2am and deal with him when he was à screaming mess bc he was overtired.

Interestingly, they never tried to disrupt us again. Seems people treasure their full nights sleep

Great advice. Thanks! I think it was all just too much. Everyone wanted to be THE ONE that calmed them down, and MH and I were like, REALLY? Poor things. Thanks!
