Does anyone cook for their dog?

I realize that this is probably not the best board to ask this because you are all busy with your children.

But does anyone cook for their dog instead of buying store bought food?  I kind of want to do this, but I want to hear from someone else who does it.

Thanks!

  • I cannot do the raw thing because it's messy and I don't have a yard.

Yeah, i was reading into that about the nutrients.  I do save all of my eggshells and they say to grind those down and then add that in for calcium.

    Ok, I'll do more research.
  • I have had to for my pup in the past when he gets sick. I usually just made a big batch of rice, chicken, peas, and carrots, and portioned it all out in ziplock baggies for a week. Took about 45 minutes.
This is why I was thinking about it.  She wasn't feeling well this weekend and I had to boil some chicken and rice.

Theres a difference between short term for a sick pup and long term.

If you have time and can hit all the nutrients, go for it!

I realize that.  And I actually do have the time, but I need to look into it more.  I want to make sure she is getting everything that she needs.

That came out snarkier than I intended. I meant it more for lurkers/others... You can't feed a dog on the boiled rice and hamburger you give to a sick pup. People have tried!

I'm sure you'll do a great job if you go this route. A friend who did it would freeze meals when she traveled to make things easier for the pet sitter.

  • I've looked into it, and have a book on it, and have had to do it for a few weeks when my dog's GI tract was having some issues. It's a pain in the butt.  I won't do it on a regular basis unless i have a dog who needs it.  Finding the right balance of micro/macronutrients, vitamins/minerals, and ... well... everything gets tedious and expensive.  I buy good, grain-free kibble, and he sometimes gets juice from our meats (or bits of meat) or egg on his food.
