WWYD?

So I have decided what I want to buy to round out my stash and I'm going to get some flats, some prefolds, and covers. Right now my DS is in a yellow edge prefold folded angel wing with about 1 1/2" folded down in the back (or is that newspaper?? Idk), and a thirsties size one cover on the lower snap. He is 5 1/2 months 14 1/2 ish pounds and 26ish inches. I know that growth kinda slows after 6 months, and I don't want to waste money. Would you get red edge prefolds? Still get size one covers?

I am also interested in some of the bummis covers but don't know what size to get there. It says medium will start fitting around 15 pounds but that is not necessarily for a baby's shape. I have a long and lean little dude! So what would you personally buy to not waste money??

Re: WWYD?

  • I would not buy more size 1 covers. Instead, get one size covers. Maybe Imagines or Best Bottoms? (I haven't used either, but Imagines are narrower than say a Blueberry and Best Bottoms are a small OS cover). If you want to try Bummis sized covers, you will probably be happier with the Super Brite in Medium than the Super Whisper. I don't think you would get much time out of the smalls.

As far as pfs/flats, I would just get flats in your current situation. I think medium GMDs will be too long for your LO, but it doesn't make sense to buy more smalls for a baby that's nearly 15 lbs.

  • I agree with getting flats instead of more prefolds. They are easier to customize the fit.

I like Blueberry coveralls. My guy is 13 lbs and 25" and they fit well on the tightest fitting.

  • Thirsties Duo wrap size 2? The Bummis IME have been pretty wide in the crotch, I like the fit of the Thirsties Duo. However, if you haven't tried Best Bottoms covers you should; you don't have to use the snap in inserts, and they are as PP stated smaller, and they are great quality.
  • My ds is around 18 pounds at 13 months with a 14-15 inch waist...he was around 28ish inches long but does have shorter than normal legs. The red medium GMD prefolds are too long/ bulky on him....even turned sideways and trifolded they are bulky. I posted a pic on here not long ago showing him in one fastened with just one Boingo. Since that pic, they have been sitting unused in a basket and I have found "flats love" so I am using flats in my pockets and with my covers. Previously, I used the snap in inserts with the Best Bottoms covers and I started using them when he was about 2-3 months old and around 8-10 pounds. I preferred the BB covers to the couple of sized Bummis covers I had.

Another vote for flats and Blueberry coveralls or Thirsties size 2.  You just can't go wrong with any of those.  Even if you hate flats in the traditional useage, they make great pocket stuffers.  But seriously, you'll love them.  So customizable.

As far as covers, I haven't tried a Bummis in a bigger size, but I keep hearing they fit weird. Especially on smaller babies.  If you want a trimmer OS cover, I really like my Sweet Peas.  They have a surprisingly tall rise (almost as tall as Blueberry), but get smaller in the waist.  I also like Best Bottoms a lot and Grovia shells, but both of those have shorter rises.  So they may not make it all the way to PL'ing if you have a taller LO.
