Trouble TTC

New RE and Question for the Board

After 6 failed IUI's, and seeking a 2nd and 3rd opinion, I decided I'm switching RE's (at this moment anyway). I found a great RE in Manhattan with awesome IVF success rates and I think it's worth it to travel a little extra to see this guy. I'll also have to leave work early since his monitoring hours aren't so great, but at this point, i'm just willing to do what I need to do to give myself the best chances possible at a successful IVF.

So my question is, has anyone switched to a new RE and gone straight for IVF after completing several IUI's with an old RE? I feel like my old RE knows how I respond a bit more than this one will, and i'm wondering if I should do one more IUI with this RE? I figure another IUI would give this RE a chance to see how I respond, rather than just reading about it, and it will give me a chance to see how the office takes care of medicated cycles. Does this sound stupid?? Also, I am covered for IUI's under my insurance but i'll be 100% OOP for IVF- in case this sways your decision...I appreciate all responses and feedback.

Happy Easter to all those who celebrate!!!

Re: New RE and Question for the Board

  • Definitely ask the new RE what they think...I agree that another IUI would give the new RE great info on how you respond, and if insurance covers it, I'd say go for it!

  • I'd talk to the Dr and see what he suggest. He may want to do an IUI on a different protocol and see how you respond before moving to IVF or he may just want to go straight into IVF.

    Good Luck!
    Fucking bump!!!!
  • Thank you for your responses. I will definitely ask my Dr. what he thinks and get his feedback. I was so nervous for my initial appointment that I feel like I did most of the talking lol.

@calindi when I met with the RE, I showed up with about 10lbs of paperwork and records so I know he definitely can see my history. I would feel kind of weird doing any monitoring with my old RE since I feel like I abandoned them- I know they have so many patients that it's probably no big deal to them, but I just feel bad!! Did you say you are traveling 13 hours to see the new RE? I wasn't sure if that was a typo. I want to wish you luck with your initial consult and testing.

  • I'm in almost your exact position.  I just went for a 2nd opinion after 5 failed IUI's, and the new RE was ready and willing (after spending quite a while going over my history and options) to move forward with IVF prep when I am ready.  When I made the appointment, they told me that the most important and helpful information that they can have are SA results, B/W, and HSG results.  If you supply them with your history, that should be enough for them to be able to move forward!!

GL!!!  I hope you can transition smoothly...I will be if my 6th and final IUI doesn't work out!

  • Given your IUI coverage, it sounds like a great idea. Even a chance for the new RE to "experiment" with a protocol that could give him more info he would want for IVF.

Congrats on finding a great new office, and good luck with whatever you choose!

  • @jszy10 It really does sound like we're in a similar situation. Good luck with your final IUI! I really hope this is it for you.

@calindi I checked out their website and WOW, they have good pricing! It's great that you know people personally that have had success with them. I believe that a good RE (and good pricing lol) is worth traveling for.

  • I am in the exactly situation as you. I have doing my last IUI with current RE, and if unsucessful, I will switch to a new RE for IVF. The reason for switching is that that clinic has a better record of IVF, and also they are open 365 days a week. The current RE closes on Sundays and holidays which I think is not going to be convenient when doing IVF.
Anyway, when I do switch, I am planning to step up to IVF right away, instead of doing IUI first.
