Pregnant after IF

Flying tips?

I'm flying to Prague this week for work (about 9 hours). Other than staying hydrated and wearing comfy clothes, any advice to ensure I have an easy flight for me and my little bean ?

IVF #1 Oct 2013- cancelled
IVF #2 Mar 2014- success.... baby girl born 11/28/14
FET #1 Mar 2016- baby boy due 12/16/16

Re: Flying tips?

  • I would try for an aisle seat, be sure to bring snacks, try to get out of your seat every hour or two to stretch and keep circulation going, and ask for extra vom bags if you are ill. I hope your flight is smooth and you have a great time!

  • Ditto PP. Make sure you let the stewardesses know. No lifting if you plan on bringing carry-on luggage.

  • Compression socks on the plane can help with unexpected swelling. I'm mobile so I can't see how far along you are, but for me at 20w I ended up swollen for about a week after the flight (6 hours). I had numbness in hands and feet and some heartburn from internal swelling. It resolved just fine, but my mfm said compression socks on the plane will help!! Otherwise all the other advice here, get up and do a lap hour, drink lots of water, avoid salty foods en route, aisle seat... Good luck and have fun in Prague.

  • I would ask for a bulkhead seat.  If you call the airline and tell them you're pregnant they'll be likely to work with you.  I only flew from NJ to FL, but having that wall in front of me to stick my feet up on was a god send.  I didn't have the bulkhead seat on the way home, and I was very uncomfortable.  I'm not 100% sure if it helped with the swelling, but I figure it couldn't have hurt.  My ankles were already swollen before my flight, and they stayed swollen for a day or two after.  Coming home, though, I didn't have any swelling.  So you never know.

This might sounds crazy, but bring a mask and some hand sanitizer and/or wipes to wipe down your armrests and the table.  There was a guy sitting next to me on our flight home literally hacking up a lung the whole time.  He even got the barf bag and was pitting up phlegm into it.  It took everything I had not to gag and puke.  Thankfully he didn't get me sick, but I tried to stay turned away from him the whole time, but I wish I had had a mask, it would have made me a lot more comfortable.

That is horrible to be stuck next to that guy. yuck! Glad you didn't get sick.
