Cloth Diapering

A good idea or jerk move?

A local mom has 8 used "htf" BG 4.0s that she posted on our swap page. Instea of selling them, she it trying to sell 100 tickets at $5, then draw 8 names who get to pick their print.

Do you think it is clever of her to raffle them or tacky?

Maybe I just don't get it because I am not into prints so I don't get the thrill of a "htf" print. ( are they really that hard to find? It seems like everyone on this board has an Albert)

  • Lots of people do this.

I kind of figured someone would say this, but it seemed to surprise most of the commenters so I wasn't sure if we are just out of the loop around here.

  • Not sure about it being clever or tacky, but it's probably illegal to host a raffle without a permit.

  • It reminds me of the Beanie Baby craze 15 years ago. I paid $40 for a bear that retailed for $5.99.

  • Maathai, Jules and Irwin haven't been made for awhile, so yeah, I'd say they are htf. Audrey is a limited edition and not many places have them in stock anymore. I have seen several posters sell their diapers in a raffle format. In fact, someone was doing it yesterday on the same board. I don't know. IMO, I think it's far less tacky than selling a Jules Flip cover for $75.
  • It's called a lottery. Isn't it like nanas dips? It's a way to get a diaper for $5. If you don't want the diapers or don't like your chances then don't do it.

I always assumed her dips were run by a business and were more legitimate somehow, like with gambling permits or something.
And duh to the second part lol.

  • How hard to find are these diapers that someone expects to get $500 for 8 USED diapers (over $60 each for diapers that would have retailed new for no more than $20ish)?  I don't have an issue with offering a raffle, but unless its for a charity, the value of the prizes should be about the total of the tickets sold.

    It's a FB group. I don't think so.

I think it's dumb of her to set a goal of sold tickets before she'll sell, like @karenhorning‌ said. I've only seen it before on the Applecheeks FB board and they usually set a time they'll close the auction (? Or raffle? Idk the difference) and sell the diaper for the regular price or a set price of the HTF, like $80 or something. I think they forbid what you're talking about because it's kind of selfish and grabby. Do they only allow one entry per person?

This sounds just like my dip group. They way it works is that you and the admins select a price (usually what you'd sell them for on the swap or at value). Then they select how much each entry is and how many entries are needed. So, if you have a wrap that sells for 1000$ on the regular swap then typically those dips are 10$ per dip/entry and a cap of 100 dips. Once the dip amount is met then you pay and then they draw. If a dip isn't closed within a set time then they get sold.

  • Seems like too much work for me. I'm lazy like that though. She'd certainly be making it worth it for $500 if she sold that many tickets. But for used diapers? That's the part that gets me.

Albert isn't a limited edition like the Chelsey Perry prints, jules/Irwin/Audrey.

  • I talked to the seller and she said that it was capped at 100 for all of the diapers, meaning she would draw multiple times for the 100 tickets. I agree that there needs to be a cutoff at how many tickets one person can buy, to make it more fair.
  • @GopherBaby13‌ I am confused, do you live by me, or are you seeing this posted somewhere else also? (I assume she has it posted multiple sites, there is no way she is going to sell all 100 tickets on our local page)

  • If it were a charity auction, run by the charity, then I would be all for it.

And yes, regardless how a lottery is done, most states require a license. At least in WI you needed one. Even if it was for a charity.

  • Eh, I'm part of an aden+anais FB group that does this all the time, selling spots for a dollar or two, but it's always capped ahead of time and with moderator approval. It's never really bothered me.

    @karenhorning‌

---------------------------------------- I think this makes more sense and is safer since it's moderated. I think in the AC board since they didn't cap off entries, some people were buying like 10 tickets and upping their chances of winning, while at the same time upping the crazy profit the seller was making. Unless you have a crazy HTF that everyone wants (like AC Samoa which does actually sell for like $200) then I think it's dumb what the woman on your (@mrshudson) board is doing. Those diapers sell for what, $50 max each? Plus there's no guarantee that a buyer would really come through and pay that much, but she's guaranteeing her profits. I think it's shady. Plus what's to stop her from deciding she wants to close it at 150 entries? Or 200 entries? There needs to be a mod.

I just looked this up: it's pink; that is it. Who the eff pays $200 for a pink diaper?!

  • I just can't get super excited over certain prints. I like cute diapers and like to match diapers to outfits (even if it only lasts 10 minutes), but I'm just too cheap to spend more than retail on a diaper.
