constipation help

My 8 mo old has been constipated pretty regularly for the last month or so.  Sometimes if we give her prunes it helps but only short term.  She still nurses frequently and usually has 3 or 4 bottles at day care (4oz) and nurses morning and night several times.  We cut out her cereal thinking maybe that was causing it but it has been 2-3 weeks and it hasn't seemed to help.  She gets baby food at day care for lunch and we will either give her baby food at home  in the evenings or some small finger foods to eat like peas, or small chunks of cooked potatoes etc.  Could it be something that I'm eating that is causing this?  I wasn't worried at first but it seems to be so consistent and isn't letting up I think I'm going to talk to her dr. about it.

We've tried giving her water with her meals in a sippy cup, we cut out bananas, cereal etc, and upped other fruits that could help, but we just can't seem to get over it.  It just about kills me watching her poop because I can tell it's uncomfortable and her stools are hard. :( Any suggestions we haven't tried?

Re: constipation help

  • What about making prunes a regular part of LO's diet? I have also heard pears help.

  • DD gets dilute prune juice everyday. I also add prune puree to her oatmeal. On days she is struggling, I give her mashed pears for dinner. She also gets quite a bit of water too.
