Cloth Diapering

questions questions...i got questions

You ladies are probably tired of me by now lol

first question...what's the difference between a pail liner and a large hanging wet bag? I need one or two of these items to put dirty dipes in and i don't know which is better...i figured a large hanging wet bag so I could hang it on a door handle somewhere but I just don't know...

second question I'll need some sort of diaper creme on hand right? With disposable diapers my pediatrician told me to use a mixture of 1/2 aquafore (sp) melted to 1/2 malox. This malox neutralize the acid in the pee and diarrhea where the aquafore soothed the skin. This stuff is amazing and clears up a rash in 2 days (for really bad rashes). I'd assume this isn't CD safe...Any suggestions for some creme to just have on hand?

Question three- what's the difference between a double, liner, and soaker ect? Do I need these for newborn or can I just sort of purchase as I go? I'm attempting to change all microfiber inserts to natural fibers but when I look at inserts I get bombarded with doublers and liners and stay dry soaker and i get very overwhelmed.

Last question...what is the base stash for a new born that you want? (including all the extra stuff like wet bags, snappi ect) what is the base stash you want for OS and sizes beyond nb(i guess this also depends on the size of baby too huh?)

  • Pail liner vs wet bag is personal preference. A pail liner goes in a . . . pail. Vs hanging up somewhere. We like a hanging wet bag because we havea small space and the pail would be inthe way.

Idk if the aquafor/maalox mixture is dc safe or not. That's a new one on me. Cjs BUTTer, grandma els, and waxelene are all cd safe and pretty popular.

Liners are thin and don't absorb anything. They maybe disposable and made out of something like rice paper or reusable and made out of fabric. They may wick moisture away (if they're fleece), protect your diaper from non cd safe cream, or make poop disposal easier (debatable).

Doublers have some absorbency but not as much as an insert. They add absorbency to a pocket or fitted or prefold set up without adding as much extra bulk as a second insert would.

Inserts are the most absorbent and you need one for each of your pockets. They come in a huge variety of materials and styles. Most pocket diapers come with microfiber, but that alone doesn't work for most babies for long and most people end up switching to or adding bamboo or hemp or something.

  • For a nb you want at least 36 changes to wash every other day. Prefolds and or fitteds with a few aio mixed in teems to be a popular combo. So like 24 prefolds, 12 workhorse fitteds, 5-6 aio and 5-8 covers.  For a os stash you can getaway with more like 24 changes and there's a lot more variety of what's popular. Everyone likes different things for different reasons. Most people seem to agree don't buy your whole stash before you start, because you'll find out what you like and want more of it. And don't buy all of onebrand because it may not work right for you. I was sure I was going to love pockets and I have a bunch and they're fine, but is like cotton and natural fibers a lot more, it turns out, because they don't hang onto smells as much and are easier to clean, for example. Or some diapers just don't fit some babies right at some stages.

  • I like large hanging wet bags. We have hooks on our closet and bedroom door for our bathrobes. They hold the wetbags, too.

You will need smaller wetbags for your diaper bag.

  • 1. Depends on what works in the space you have. We don't have a good place to hang a large wetbag, so we do a pail liner in a step trash can. We have a locking can from simplehuman. I originally got it because I was worried the dog might be interested in the dirties, but turns out he is not. BUT, now that DS is mobile he is very curious about the diaper pail, so it is a good thing that I can lock it. It still gets plenty of air circulation, which is the main thing you need to keep odors down.

    2. I'm pretty sure Aquafor is not CD safe. Aquafor mixed with anything is also not CD safe. If you are dealing with a wetness sensitivity, Grandma El's or Waxelene will probably provide the best protection. After that I like CJ's, Grovia Magic Stick. Earth Mama Angel Baby is also popular as is coconut oil, but I have found those to be on the lighter end of the spectrum.

    3. has been answered beautifully by PPs.

    4. What is your budget and your tolerance for a learning curve? Flats are cheapest but have the steepest learning curve. For NB stash I would be biased towards having some combination of flats, fitteds and prefolds with covers. You just get a better fit with these types of diapers. How many of each type depends on your budget and again, whether you are willing to learn folds or you want something easier to use. For OS stash, again, what are you looking at for budget? I recommend getting a few of each kind that you are interested in, and try them on your baby before you fill out your stash.

  • I wouldn't say the learning curve is steep for flats. Not by any means. It takes a few minutes to find a fold you like. Then you use that fold. Boom.
This is true. I think the learning curve for any type of diaper is probably like, 2 changes. Maybe a few more for flats if you are trying out different folds, but yes it's easy once you figure out what works for you.
  • You don't need more than one snappi, but I like having multiples. I typically keep one in the diaper bag, and one at each changing station (1 upstairs, 1 down). It's helpful if switching from a pocket to a flat.

  • Oh yeah, and I have an open pail and pail liner. One of my pails is a hamper with holes in the sides. No stink. The dog hasn't so much as looked at it, and she's been caught licking out the potty as well as eating the kitchen garbage. Gross.

One time J's dog (no way I'm claiming ownership over this one) ate a poop right out of a diaper. Ugh.

  • Have you thought about soaking or swishing vs spraying? We plan on spraying and added a diaper sprayer and spray shield to our basic stash.

  • @AFwifelife‌ when I packed the diaper bag today, I put two flat, already folded and then I pinned each flat closed with spare diaper pins.....I figured that would be a good way to have extra pins in the diaper bag just in case.....and it would do double duty of keeping the flats folded.

  • Forgot to mention ... in addition to the step trash can I have next to the changing station, I keep a small hanging wet bag in the bathroom where we clean off poopy diapers. So we don't have to carry them back through the house to the main diaper bin.
