Sound machine

Talk to me about sound machines. I'm being a PW because DH is out of town and I'm bored and lonely.

Tell me the pros/cons. J is a good sleeper, but a light sleeper! DH says he feels like he has to tiptoe around the house when she's sleeping so he doesn't wake her. My concern is that if we start using one, she won't be able to sleep without it!

I love ours! It's set to 'ocean' and it does a great job blocking out noises. P is a light sleeper as well and I don't know what we'd do without it. I'll worry about taking it away when the time comes :-)

We have one! I think it's set at Ocean. The dogs can bark when the delivery man rings the doorbell and he sleeps right through it. He also seems to be able to sleep without it. He stayed overnight at the in laws and didn't have it and he also naps fine at daycare without it. https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=16831326&mr:keyword=&mr:trackingCode=653D8E66-7315-E311-A497-90E2BA285E75&mr:match=&mr:adType=pla&mr:filter=38524442446&cagpspn=plab_14490035&mr:referralID=NA&mr:ad=35201293966&mr:device=t&camp=PLAPPC-_-PID14490035&KPID=14490035 The husband and I also use one and I can't sleep without it. I think they are fantastic! Adding: we leave it on all night. I've found that if it shuts off after 30 min or so he will wake up. If he falls asleep without it, he can sleep without it but if it's on it has to stay on. And formatting on an ipad sucks.

  • I also use an app on my phone so that I always have it with me. I've even used it in the car to get him to sleep better.

  • We have a conair one from Amazon set to white noise. It also has battery back up. My older son has screamed in the middle of the night or taken a long time to fall asleep and LO has not woken up once because of him! LO often naps at a friends house when were there for a play date and I always bring it with us. Love it!

  • I downloaded an oceans sound cd to my iPod. And got a alarm clock with a dock. Instant sound machine. I think N would sleep without it now. But I am not sure if I could

  • We use one at home but we are out of town and I forgot it. DD can sleep without it through the night without waking. I use it more to block out sound and it seems to relax her when going down. I use the white noise app on my phone too sometimes.

We adjusted the ac vent in B's room so the air makes a loud whooshing noise. We turn the AC on at night but also turn on the air so it is always blowing regardless of whether the air is being cooled or not. (Not sure if I'm describing that very well.) We went that route when B started waking up when the sleep sheep white noise thing would auto shut off after 30 minutes and when we realized that we didn't like having to leave our iPhones in B's room.
  • I love ours! I use the white noise, crickets and rain settings.  When we go to other people's houses we just bring it with us.  We may be stuck with it forever but my husband can use his sander, grinder and other power tools, we can shower in the room beside him and have the radio on in the house pretty damn loud!

  • We have the homedics sound spa one and it doubles as a projector, which is great when they are a little older.  It has several white noise sounds and some lullabies too. Its about 20 bucks at sold at Target, Bed Bath and Beyond, Buy Buy Baby, and Amazon, that I've seen.

  • Forgot to add, we used this same one with DD1 starting around 18 months and she is still using it at almost 6. DH and I have one too. We mostly use it to block sounds.

  • Sounds like I have the same one as @CL8BadB.  Ours is kinda junky- the projector part has broken a couple of times, but the sound part has been fine.   Honestly, though, we do it out of habit.  We forgot to tell my MIL about it, but B slept fine when she put him to bed without it on.
