Transitioning to the one nap?

edited April 2014 in May 2013 Moms
Is anyone's LO transitioning to one nap?  How is this going for you?   How did you decide it was time to do it, and what time did you go with?  How did it affect your lunchtime?  My LO is fighting at least one nap, though he still seems tired with just the one.   I put so much effort into getting him down for each nap though, that one nap almost seems like it would be easier for us.    It seems like it would be one struggle versus two.

Also, curious to hear from those that are sticking with the two naps.  Is LO still going down easy for both?

Re: Transitioning to the one nap?

  • We are really just letting her call the shots.  Sometimes is two one to 1.5 hour naps; some days it's one 2+ hour nap.  There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it right now.

  • I transitioned DD1 to 1 nap a week after her first birthday and it went extremely well. With this girl, I don't think she's ready. She sleeps better at night when she has two good naps, so I'm keeping two naps for a while longer. She fights both naps, so I'm no help there. As far as lunch, I'd put her down for her one nap around noon or just after so normally we would do a mini lunch right before nap and another mini lunch shortly after waking up.

DS will only nap once a day.  Very rarely does he nap twice in one day.  His nap is usually late morning just before lunch and is about 30mins-2hours.   He seems to do well with this and I'm happy to just get one nap out of him because getting him to nap used to be SO much work and so few.

  • I am trying to transition to one nap a day. It's just easier to plan things with only one nap. Lunch is earlier at 11ish instead of 12pm. DS doesn't put up a fight because he so exhausted by the time nap comes.

This is us. He's fighting / refusing the first one, but does so much better when he has two. We're just kind of playing it by ear right now.. .

  • She transitioned herself to one nap around 10 months, it's 2 to 3 hours.

  • I realized I didn't fully answer. The nap is from 1130-12 to 230-3. So lunch is kinda not a good time for plans. I realized she only needed one nap because she was fighting me like heck when I was trying to give her a morning and afternoon nap.

  • LO has been down to one nap for about a month now. She was fighting the second nap every day and everything got so much easier when I gave up on it. She was napping at around 11 and then at around 3 before...and now she goes down between 12 and 1, after she has her lunch. She will now nap around 2 hours which is awesome. When I was fighting to get two, I usually only got one 45 minute nap out of her.

This is day 3 of only taking a morning nap. And his nap is only about an hour and 20 minutes. I was hoping he wouldn't transition to one until closer to 2. Oh, and he still wakes up in the motn.

  • I let DS sleep whenever he wants to sleep. Sometimes he has 2 short naps, sometimes he has one long one. Sometimes he has 3 naps. Since we don't have a schedule or real routine, his naps don't really affect lunch. If he sleeps around when we normally have lunch, I just wait and have lunch later. If he sleeps during supper, we save him a plate and he eats when he wakes up.  He also doesn't STTN.

  • Wow...LO still takes at least 2 sometimes 3naps a day! She's an early June baby so one of the younger babies here.

  • DS wakes up between 9-10 so his first nap is not until 1130-12 or when he is yawning and rubbing his eyes. Then DS will usually take another nap around 4-430, which I love because I can start dinner.

I think when he is consistently fighting one of his naps we will rearrange his naps so that his 1 nap is early afternoon.

  • @beaubecca‌ just curious, what time does he have lunch? 12 seems like the perfect time for LO to go down lately but it makes feeding her awkward.
