Cloth Diapering

Overnight diaper question

Hey ladies! So I was wondering... We tried an overnight diaper on my two year old for the first time last night. It was a WAHM fitted, with a thirsties hemp insert added on the outside and a cover to hold it all in.

We didn't have any leaks, but I found the diaper was drenched. Like, absolutely filled to capacity and my daughter smelled like urine really bad. I knew she was a heavy wetter, but this was a crazy amount.

Is it normal for ON diapers to be this full, or should I find a better solution for ON?

If it didn't leak, I'd stick with it. Cloth doesn't make them pee more, obviously, but you definitely can notice it more. I've done CD all along, and now that my daughter is 2, sometimes she holds her pee 5+ hours and then pees all at once, overwhelming the diaper. At night she wears a big bulky prefold with a hemp pad and usually a Blueberry cover, but that's too bulky for daytime. So we are having our first big issue with CD, but I think potty training is really the only solution for us.
  • Drenched is normal...ish. If its not leaking I'd say it works. But don't rule of fitteds because of this wahm since there are lots of tried and true options.

(We don't actually use fitteds fwiw, so ON diapers come in a variety of forms. But the combo we so use is pretty soaked / heavy).

My seven and a half month old can soak a TTNN but it doesn't leak. As long as it doesn't leak you should be ok

  • I'd like to get my hands on a better fitted. Are the gmd workhorses okay for overnight? And maybe we can try putting the insert inside the fitted one night to see if that works any better. I honestly used the wahm because it's what we had on hand and I wasn't sure if we'd be able to make cloth work ON.

@L0L0 when you use a prefold and hemp pad, does it make your baby's legs frog out quite a bit? And is the okay for them overnight? We tried that once, but my husband was insistent we take it off immediately because of how bulky it was. This fitted was a little more trim for his taste, so he didn't insist we switch to disposables for that night.

  • We used fitteds overnight and they were generally drenched and stinky in the morning.

  • Diaper junction has some bamboo fitteds that are pretty cheap that are supposed to work well overnight. I have not personally tried them.

  • GMD workhorses aren't great ON diapers for heavy wetters. They are essentially as absorbent as a prefold with a cotton doubler.

Also, if your current ON fitted is trimmer than a prefold with a hemp doubler there are likely other WAHM fitteds out there that are more absorbent. Since with cloth often bulk = absorbency.

DD used to wear a TTNN for ON (and holy bulky diaper, batman!), but now wears a GMD XL prefold with a hemp insert. Bulky diapers pretty much only bother parents, not babies.

But, if the diaper doesn't leak, it's working IMO.
